How do you remove the governor?

Many people ask me how to do this so I made a video showing the process. So if you have ever wondered how to remove the governor from a go kart engine, this video might help. Attached are the associated still pictures for the process.

thats very neat never seen it done

There are two ways to do it. One is the way as shown in the vid..called the short way if you can get that snap ring off. If not, you have to take the other side of the engine apart and knock the pin out. Then you still have to get into the side cover to remove the governor wheel but knocking the pin out is pretty easy vs the snap ring. Just gotta do the extra work in taking that side of the engine apart.

Do i need to keep the govenor arm Connected to the engine, or i can take it out?

BuggyMaster 08-07-2011 09:46 PM

You actually need to leave it on and use it for the return spring setup.

is the stock tecumseh 6.5 the same setup as the engine shown -- ie procedure and needing the return spring?

From experience I'd leave the govenor on a Tecumseh engine."Very" short life when removed, whereas the Honda clone engines survive very well without them-other than harder to start,

I'll take your word on that ... I take it the factory has them pretty much at their upper rpm limit. Don't want a Hobbs "Kablammo" for a few extra rpm. I'd swear this thing hits mid 30s when i sling it off the bank of my sideyard and head across the front lawn.

It probably does get to about 32-35 mph.
