Polaris Predator 500

I know it is not a buggy but it makes for a good benchmark. I'll tell you that this thing is a beast of a machine and exceeds my riding capabilities. In the right hands the times would likely be even better. What I have learned from this is that just a few seconds in Track Attack times equates to a heck of a lot more performance.

Standing Start: 30:97
Rolling Start 30:03

Likely could have been in the 29's but like I said, more than this old man can handle to the fullest.

(Might take a min for vid to process)

can i pleeeeeeaaaaaaaaasssssse ride it ?!??!?

i will give you 1 dollar

joshstep1 11-29-2009 09:07 PM

Hey, Buggymaster, I had an awesome idea! You should take the 500 out of the Predator and put it in a 150 buggy's frame! That would be BA.

BuggyMaster 11-29-2009 09:09 PM

already thought about it but that's a really nice four wheeler and would be a shame to tear it apart like that.

joshstep1 11-29-2009 09:16 PM

Yeah, I guess you're right about that. Do you have any other ATVs with huge engines that you don't care about as much as you to the Predator?

24evanwilson 11-30-2009 01:57 PM

same reason im not doin that to my z

joshstep1 11-30-2009 02:00 PM

It would be awesome, right?

24evanwilson 11-30-2009 02:02 PM

yeah......

I've ridden a friend's slightly modified predator and it was definitely a bit of a handful. A lot of fun, though. Can't wait until I can upgrade to a quad :)

I'll always keep the go kart, but I've wanted a quad ever since I was a kid and damnit I'm going to get one! :) Gotta pay off the wife's student loans first, though.

joshstep1 12-01-2009 01:46 PM

What kind of atv are you going to get?

24evanwilson 12-01-2009 04:14 PM

get a z 400 lol

dreesemonkey 12-02-2009 07:37 AM

The Z400 is what I want to get, though I could buy two cheaper quads (one for me, one for the wife) for the same price. I like the Z because it has reverse :)

One the cheap end of the scale I'm thinking about a Kawasaki Mojave 250 for me and a Bayou 220/250 for the wife. I've always had a soft spot for the bayous because my neighbors had one growing up and they had that thing for like 20 years. I could get both in decent condition for around $1000 each, which is very enticing. The big problem with the mojave is that it's kickstart only (which I don't mind), but the headlight kinda sucks because there is no battery.

Other quads I'd consider are Yamaha Warrior (heavy, but proven), 400/300ex (pricey compared to similar quads), raptor 250, etc.

joshstep1 12-02-2009 08:07 AM

If there is no battery, how do you recharge the battery?

BuggyMaster 12-02-2009 11:24 AM

You don't. Runs on the generator.

Ohhhhh

O_o .

Huh.

I recently picked up a Polaris Outlaw 500 that threw a rod. Bought it for the Fox shocks to go on to my Blade 250. As it turns out, I'm now rebuilding the 500 engine to go onto the Blade. Looks like it'll be fairly straight forward. Won't be as fast as above, but hopefully it'll break the tires a little. Got cams, race head, new cylinder, crank etc. Just have to finish rebuilding it. The rest of the 4-wheeler got parted/sold and I made my money back!

Wish me luck.

BuggyMaster 04-22-2010 01:08 PM

Great buy really. They are potent engines.

ChuckC 04-22-2010 01:39 PM

That's what I'm wondering as I have absolutley no experience with it other than the immediate tear-down I'm in the middle of. About to split the case and replace the crank and rod, then reassemble with the new components I got.

Any idea how well such an animal will work on my Blade/Kinroad? It's the XTX 250. I know I can transplant it really easy with a little welding. Just don't know how it will perform, how well the clutch will hold up, etc.

BuggyMaster 04-22-2010 01:43 PM

I see massive burnouts in your future. Single cylinder honker engine is a great combination. I think it will be well worth your while. Look at my megabuggy thread with the raptor 660 engine on it. Mine is a lot heavier than most buggies too.

ChuckC 04-22-2010 01:46 PM

Yeah, I saw that and is what lead me to post. Guessing that your experience with the Raptor engine wasn't bad other than not having more than 1st gear...

I'll be all the way into the tranny anyways, so will replace anything bad when I'm there. Was just thinking since the buggy's bigger than the quad it'll stress the engine more, but I'm also gearing it down to a 54 tooth sprocket on the back spool.

BuggyMaster 04-22-2010 01:48 PM

That was one thing that I thought I would have to change. Mine has a 54 rear on it now and I thought I would need to put it down to a 48 or something and after I got a chance to ride it I now know that it was a perfect combination. My drive sprocket is a 13.

ChuckC 04-22-2010 03:02 PM

Good - that's where I'll start.

Did the clutch feel like it would hold up? Also, did you have reverse and if so, how'd that work out?

BuggyMaster 04-22-2010 03:03 PM

I didn't have any clutch issues and felt it would be fine. I did have reverse but I didn't have it hooked up just yet. I believe that would be fine as well.

buggyburr 09-30-2010 01:17 PM

i'll give you a $2 bill if you let me ride if you let me ride it!!!!!
