Gy6 with reverse direct driven gear problems

4 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

New to this forum, I have an old 2 seater buggy with gy6 157qmj (from memory) engine which directly drives both back wheels, no chain. And a bigger single seater with a Yamaha FJ1200 bike engine in it, chain driven. I live in Scotland and like to tinker with mechanical stuff.

I've got a problem with a GY6 engine which I got in an old two seater buggy. The buggy has reverse also. It wasn't driving properly so I stripped the engine out and opened up the gearbox and found one large gear missing three teeth and the gear it meshes with is quite mangled. Ok easy I thought, count the teeth pop on fleabay and buy some new gears, gy6 is a popular engine. But I cannot find replacement gears anywhere. I can find replacements for the big gear (excuse my ignorance of what the gears are properly called) but with the wrong amount of teeth and cannot find the smaller gear anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get these or recommend what else I can do, I've seen complete gear sets but they don't look like they are the same as the gear sets in my gy6. The big gear has 44 teeth and 34 splines and the small one has 11 teeth and 6 splines on the shaft its part of. Cheers, pulling my hair out trying to work out how to fix this thing, its been a non runner now since last summer and I want to get it fixed to get out with my son who has own little buggy.

Wow looks like some dmg for sure. Not sure where you can get the gears your looking for. Never really messed with em. But I'm sure there is someone on here that can.

Do you happen to know the brand of buggy?

mibazza 01-14-2018 06:16 AM

No theres no branding on it and it looks fairly generic I've seen quite a few brands online that look the same, the engine is stamped 157QMJ from memory although I'd have to check. I'll take photos and check the engine when I get home from offshore in two weeks time.

It looks quite like this but a lot older this is a GSMoon from google images

Does it have a solid axle or independent suspension

mibazza 01-15-2018 12:26 AM

It has independent suspension both axles go into the gearbox

SYCARMS 01-15-2018 10:11 AM

GS Moon is the only 150 buggy I have known to have rear independent suspension, they were around only a very short time and I've yet to find a source for their parts. You might have to find a machine shop to cut the gears.

Ok cool, well good to get an experts opinion, and the fact they weren't around long would explain why its so difficult to find parts. I'll find out about the machine shop option but I paid three hundred for the whole buggy so might not be cost effective although in truth I've no idea how much something like that will cost till I start contacting local companies. Thanks all for your help so far. I'll update as I find out about machining.

Try going here https://www.alibaba.com/showroom/gsm...are-parts.html

Thanks very much for the link Sycarms, I've found the right gears I need on that site and have requested a quote to buy both the parts I need from a company that sells them. So hopefully I get a positive outcome. I'll post back any info for others if I get them. EDIT: Well I've managed to order them both from someone and they cost me £117 shipped to my house, which I thought was pretty reasonable seeing as they are incredibly rare. I'll update once they arrive.

Good to hear.
