Wont run with air filter

Ive ot a carbide 150 and the thing runs awful when the air filter in also runs bad with the empty air box but with the open carb it runs great??? but with filter and all seems to be flooding any help would be appreciated, is it the f.e.v or what ?:cussing:

T3beatz 05-01-2012 12:43 PM

How old is the filter? does it need to be replaced/cleaned?

I would scrap the stock air filter and get a Uni or a foam filter like the uni.

this is a link you can read about it and kinda see how it installs on your buggy... http://www.rc-trucks.org/gy6-engine-performance.htm

metalstudman1 05-01-2012 01:43 PM

Have you tried to adjust the fuel/air mix screw? How long has it been since the carb was cleaned? I doubt the FEV (if bad) would be causing this.

jared 05-01-2012 01:45 PM

yeah carb is clean just cleaned it everything looks fine and it wont run right even with the stock box and n filter in it meaning just the box and piping everything is clear in the piping. but if yur remove the box and piping at the carb it runs like a beast.

metalstudman1 05-01-2012 02:02 PM

Still sounds like a dirty carb!!!

jared 05-01-2012 02:23 PM

well guess i can check that again but will have to wait til i have time, what circuit in the carb would make this happen? also ive read online abut adjusting the screws that hld the f.e.v is this true? maybe thats where i made my goof

metalstudman1 05-01-2012 02:29 PM

There is no adjustment for the FEV, the 2 screws just secure it to the carb. It sounds like one of the orfices is clogged in the carb-

jared 05-01-2012 02:36 PM

well thanks like i said have to wait til maybe the weekend i'll let you know what i find

jared 05-02-2012 12:08 PM

ok got to tinker a little last night same problem as before so checked the fev found it to move out when power added to it tested the harness that powers it and only getting 1.6 volts is this right or is this my issue

T3beatz 05-02-2012 12:32 PM

I doubt that that is your issue. When my carb was dirty I took broke it completely down and used carb cleaner and air to clean everything. Did you ever check your filter? was it clean or very clogged looking?

jared 05-02-2012 12:38 PM

everything looks fine and i did totally disassemble and thoroughly clean the carb this thing is driving me nuts

metalstudman1 05-02-2012 06:25 PM

Have you tried to adjust the fuel/air screw to see if that makes a difference?

jared 05-03-2012 07:37 AM

yes i have an it really doesnt seem to help just stays rich after warm up and spits and sputters at wo throttle but at bottom end to maybe half throttle runs fine

T3beatz 05-03-2012 11:14 AM

I don't know the voltage the fev gets, but I do know that it is not 12v, it goes through a resistor so It would be lower. Make sure all your connections are tight, electrical and lines. I would think about getting rid of the stock airbox soon anywho and re-jetting the carb. But before you do, get it working in it's current state.

jared 05-03-2012 11:21 AM

yeah thats the plan but not til it runs right

metalstudman1 05-03-2012 11:37 AM

Your voltage to the FEV sounds right- I've found that they either work or they don't!! too much voltage or lack of resistor block will cause premature failure. If you're still running rich after the FEV extends then your jetting is off (assuming that the spark plug & gap are correct) Have you adjusted the valves to verify they're correct?

jared 05-03-2012 11:49 AM

havent adjusted the valves but this thing only has like 10 hrs on it havent checked the schedule for valve adjustment though and everything is stock, story is this is my wifes and right after we got it found out we were expecting so she stopped riding it, so sat for nearly 2 yrs, too busy to ride, and now i cleaned the carb just like my fourwheelers or anyhting else, so kinda new to the cv carb but pretty sure its all back right, this thing is eating my lunch

metalstudman1 05-03-2012 11:56 AM

I'm not the sharpest tool in the box!- I have a box full of new and old carbs that have been gone through and still won't function correctly!!!! I realize they're just a mechanical part that should function with all the right adjustments but WON'T. As cheap as these carbs are I'd risk buying a new one!! What's you're mental stability worth??

jared 05-03-2012 11:58 AM

true lol think that may be my next move i'll have to do some shopping but may turn out to be fun, we've been talking bout a few mods and mybe its time

metalstudman1 05-03-2012 12:07 PM

I always feel I can make anything work- I have some carbs that function perfectly for years and new/rebuilt ones that I constantly have to tinker with - I swap them to another engine and have zero issues. Sometimes we just have to make an offering to the carb god's by buying a new one!!!!!!!! Sorry we couldn't pin-point your specific issue

jared 05-03-2012 12:10 PM

its ok i'll keep trying thanks a lot

T3beatz 05-03-2012 12:54 PM

It's just crazy... you say that it runs good with the air filter off, but once you put it on it starts to run like s#!t. seems the only thing your introducing into the picture is the air filter box.

jared 05-03-2012 01:59 PM

yeah thought it was weird like just a little more resriction on air flow and it smothers, but without a box it runs good, but is still smelling rich, but add the box without a filter and runs awful

T3beatz 05-03-2012 02:45 PM

only other thing I can think of is when you cleaned the main jet you might have opened it up a little on accident.

jared 05-03-2012 02:47 PM

maybe so but i usually just use copper wire to run through them

x-bird 05-03-2012 11:02 PM

maybe a crack in the carb-to-head elbow that's opening up when you add the air box on it and closes up without it?

jared 05-04-2012 07:32 AM

thats true maybe find out this weekend

T3beatz 05-04-2012 10:50 PM

I just had to change mine out because it was doing the same thing, my intake manifold had a 1.5" crack just under the metal ring. Everytime I would move the carb the idle would just get sucky, and when I drove it it would run horrible (probably from the vibes). I changed out manifolds and all my problems went away.

jared 05-07-2012 07:32 AM

worked on it this weekend glad i ordered parts lol, found the manifold busted at the o ring face, and put on new carb idles better and isnt as rich now, runs better, but still not like it should now thinking elec issue still spitting and sputtering maybe cdi?

bad cdi? doubt it, As a rule they either work 100% or not at all. You switched out the carb? did you switch the jets also? The new carbs are not jetted correctly for the buggys. Inspect ALL the electrical connections, clean them and make sure they are tight.

jared 05-08-2012 08:42 AM

did not change the jets assumed them to be correct with factory replacement carb. what jet should i use for the carb seen many but not sure what to use. the machine is still stock would like to have it running good at stock and then upsize. but if rejetting anyway whats the prefered size. have looked at all electrical connections and all are clean and tight. it just misses like something electrical. removed exhaust and no improvement. air filter new, carb new( but no gaurantee aparently), added 12 v to fev while riding and no improvement. so it seems to be working properly, just going nuts here

T3beatz 05-08-2012 09:11 AM

I think 115 is stock for most of them, check and see what yours are.

jared 05-08-2012 09:52 AM

will do thanks

buggypowermaker 05-09-2012 01:23 PM

sounds like your in need of a k and n filter

jared 05-09-2012 01:55 PM

maybe havent figured it out will one day hopefully, i did remove my plug and looks like its running lean, so thinking of junking factory filter for a uni filter and some jets hope it works
