Repack muffler

I am currently using the FMF universal muffler on my setup. After installing it yesterday I noticed it was way to loud for my liking. From what I have read this muffler is a 2-stroke muffler. I was thinking about repacking it with a 4-stroke fmf kit. Will this lower the noise a bit? Notice any difference in the way it runs?

you really won't know til you open it up. if it's fully packed between the core and shell, then a repack probably won't make much of a difference.

Did you buy the muffler new? If it was used, and the jetting was incorrect, as about 80% of 2 smokes are, then you might gain some noise reduction repacking it. They are notorious for getting caked in oil and soot and thus acting like a straight pipe.

I had it on my gy6 but swapped it to my 250 after I bought the hammerhead exhaust. I am going to repack it. I did have a couple blown pistons on the gy6 and some blow by. Though the muffler doesn't have but maybe 6 hours of run time on it.

I have the fmf universal muffler on both of our dunes and it was stupid loud with the 1 1/4 open tail pipe. So I used the tubing it came with to make a turn down tail pipe with a smaller 7/8 pipe inside the tail pipe to make some back pressure. Without back pressure the motor runs sloppy and power is down. The noise is livable with a helmet on but still loud for me. I also was thinking the same thing with the 4 stroke packing to reduce the nasty bark from the muffler. I will try to repack the muffler this weekend and get back with you on the results.

Let me know how it turns out. I may repack mine as the 4-stroke repack came in yesterday.

Well no luck on the repacking. I couldn't get the damned muffler apart. I tried knocking it forward toward the outlet, but it would only go so far. I cant remove the cover towards the inlet due to the muffler being welded onto the header.

The inlet pipe has to be removed, the outlet is were the spark arrestor is. I tried to remove mine yester day and it is not budging but I will get it today. The one on my dirt bike was easier to remove. I was whacking the housing with a rubber mallet and no luck.

Did you remove the muffler from your buggy?

I took the muffler off of the buggy. But the muffler had to be welded onto the header as there is no way to keep it on there otherwise. I may have to hacksaw the sucker and get it rewelded.

Cant you remove the header pipe with the muffler?

mb1134 02-18-2014 05:29 AM

Yes, but I cut the pipe size down to make the muffler stick straight out the back of the buggy. It is angled on the 250 and you cant get the cover off the way it is. The header either needs cut so you can take the cover off of the inlet side, or the cover needs to come off the outlet side of the muffler.
