Comet 30 torque converter - driver bushing?

I have a Comet 30 converter on my Yerf 3002. The driver clutch started making a horrible noise, which I think I've isolated to a brass bushing deep between the two walls of the pulleys. As far as I can tell, the bushing's duty is to keep the clutch from squeezing to close together, and possibly throwing the belt.

1.) Do I have the right idea as to the purpose of this bushing?

2.) Do I need to have it in there?

3.) Can I get a bushing without buying a new driver clutch? If so, where?

Thanks!

That really serves as almost like a bearing. You can buy them from gokartsrus via part number 14699. They are only a few dollars a piece. I usually buy a few since they tend to wear out. When they do wear out, the belt does tend to be a bit more catchy and can create noise.

Try Tom @ SYCPowersports. American Sportworks offers this bushing as well.
