Automatic fan switch
 

Hey guys, the other day my fan on the buggy wouldn't turn on. I pulled the wires off the auto temp switch and when I put them together the fan ran. I think that means its bad? The buggys temp was 210. So I put a new one in and it kicks on at 165. Is that a lower temp than it should? It runs constantly while I'm riding because of this. I realize I'm being sort of anal worrying about the buggy not overheating(haha) I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about these buggys.btw it's a trailmaster 300. And the new switch is a hammerhead 250's. Thanks for any thoughts you guys might have.

no problem with worrying about overheating ...beats killing an engine. If the fan running all the time doesn't bother you, then you're good to go. i'm not familiar enough with these engines to know what their ideal operating temperature is.

I know for one of my cars a ten to 15 degree difference does affect performance--most guys run that particular engine a little too cool 170-185 and tend to worry if they're in the 200s--and waste a lot of money on aluminum rads etc, but 195-210 is its sweet spot.

What temp did it originally run at?

The buggy ran 200-210 but it was also 100-110 temp outside. The temp yesterday was low 90's maybe that is why it ran cooler? The buggy ran around 180-190 yesterday. The old fan switch kicked on at 195 but it was the stock one. I wonder if all hammerhead 250 fans kick on at 165?

They probably do, which is why it runs all the time with it. the HH 250 may have a different cooling passage configuration around the cylinder head and need to have the heat pulled out more than your 300.

So you figure it's even worth worrying about? I know some guys hard wire their fans to run all the time. Maybe I'm getting the best of both worlds becaus it let's it warm up then keeps it nice and cool. Haha

Not worth worrying about unless it begins to drain down your battery while running with lights on.
