Looking for a 'Spidey reverse kit

I have my eye on this one: http://bit.ly/19TG0Vs

And besides getting a rod to shift it from the seat, and a handle, could I put this on my spiderbox? And does anyone know where and what to measure for fitment? What's the difference between this and the BD kit?

Davcruz 11-11-2013 11:42 AM

I am not sure if that will fit a Howhit at all. Looks noting like the external unit that BD sells and appears to bolt directly to the gear housing somehow. Certainly would put the sprocket out too far to come close to lining up with the axle sprocket and would require a shifter as you mentioned. Looks like a lot of work to save minimal dollars over the essentially bolt-on unit from BD.

The BD unit is very different, it mounts to the output shaft and than has a bar that attaches to the engine case so the reverse assembly doesn't spin. It is cable actuated and is a very simple system. I put a very similar external unit on our spiderbox, I got it from a Carter Talon I purchased for parts.

you are asking for trouble no one would be able to help you with if you buy this. where would you put a handle on it? how would it bolt on? too many questions on this item.

zman007007 11-11-2013 03:58 PM

if you want to see what buggy depot"s look like, go to their homepage it is right there.

TheFauxFox 11-11-2013 05:31 PM

Interesting....I just absolutely HATE how BD NEVER puts measurements on their items, but I guess that is to keep people from doing it themselves or finding a different part that is the same size, but cheaper... I'll keep looking. zman, if you could post pics with measurements, that would be great!

thnx

They don't put measurements on the site due to the kit being an exact fit for the models listed. There isn't any guess work as the crossfire and yerf both came with the Howhit engine.

TheFauxFox 11-11-2013 07:55 PM

Interesting... I'll keep looking. Cuz, I want reverse and all, but I don't want to spend $249...

sleepyrz 11-11-2013 07:55 PM

that also has like a 19 tooth gear on it!!!! and its a lever type compare to the bd one which is 16 tooth and is cable actuated

I don't know how partial you are to the yerf, but.....
Just a suggestion; you could sell it. Then buy a unit that already has all the bells and whistles.
I bought my Carbide for $700 being patient and searching C.L. daily.
Only thing it needed was a battery ($45), front fenders ($7 a peice) and a small weld on seat bracket.
Once I opened CVT I saw the rollers had flat spots, but it still ran strong.
Just a suggestion. The more I read your wishlist to get it trail worthy it looks like you would have to spend close to $1000.

Lol I very much would like to keep it. My parents hate my "back and fourth" personality when it comes to toys. Lol. Buy this sell this.... Drives 'em up the wall. So... I'll just mod the living crap out of the Spiderbox. Besides reverse, I think I'll just get the new rims/tires, ball joints, a arm reinforcements, and maybe some seat covers.... Adding on reverse it is easily gonna be a $700 project (after chucking 675 on the kart itself). Nice buggies around here are hard to find for under 1000$. If you find one in the Atlanta area for under 600, something's badly wrong. I haggled my spider from an asking of 800!

TheFauxFox 11-11-2013 10:12 PM

Update! According to these people, this kit fits the spiderbox... http://bit.ly/1bxcVxx

Anyone? Anyone?

zman007007 11-12-2013 06:36 AM

OK I can see now why your parents say you drive them crazy. LOL 1st of all, this is $100 cheaper now than the one on BD but there is no shifter handle or shifter cable. where would you get these? also according to what BD says, since this has the 2 piece support it is the older model of theirs.

zman007007 11-12-2013 06:44 AM

as far as measurements Master explained it best in his post. :hail::hail::hail:

TheFauxFox 11-12-2013 07:29 AM

LOL. I just DO NOT want to spend that kindof money on a simple reverse gearbox. I was even looking at hooking up a starter motor to a small controller and use IT for reverse... Just hook it up to a fly wheel and your good to go! I just don't like the prospect of it because if I go in reverse for a minute or so (maybe I'm backing out of a trail too much for my kart?) and the batt goes, I have to start, and no reverse. So basically I'm screwed. So I need to find a gearbox. I'm searching the local CL to see if I can find a small junker GY6 to use as parts

zman007007 11-12-2013 07:35 AM

also with this one it doesn't have the longer shaft for your gearbox like the one that came with mine from BD.

zman007007 11-12-2013 07:40 AM

you know, I believe I am glad now you didn't buy that Helix from me. you won't listen to anyone. lol

TheFauxFox 11-12-2013 07:50 AM

Zman, I'm listening! I just don't like what I'm hearing and I'm trying to go the way T3BEATZ and his bro went. $249 is an EXORBITANT price for this, and by the time I save that money, I'm sure the price will go back up to $299... It looks like I'll have to do it I I want my reverse, but I'll be doing it grudgingly. :(

TheFauxFox 11-12-2013 09:24 AM

I dunno guys... This reverse kit looks IDENTICAL to the BD one.... And I KNOW for a fact that BD REALLY charges a lot more than they should on some other items....

Ebay:

SYCARMS 11-12-2013 10:40 AM

The BD rev will work and is a good product. There are differences between the higher priced like BD as compared to the cheaper units. You can pay the price now and have a good product or go the cheap route and have to buy another unit in a year or two. I have found the better rout is cheaper in the long run by far.

He said it best.

First, you need to save up your money and then look at the market and see what is available. I understand doing research in advance, but beating this thing the way you are right now is just nonsense.

Second, BD has what is basically a plug-n-play system to add reverse to your Yerfdog. They have done all the research, found all the parts, put them in a kit and even supplied instructions SPECIFICALLY for your buggy. Their price of $249 or even $299 is not exorbitant, it is very fair and they are a business with actual employees and a facility.

Third, the eBay item you listed is missing about $50-80.00 worth of parts you will require, probably closer to $100 and you have to more or less figure out what is missing and then go source the parts from another vendor. No warranty, no tech support, no nothing.

Understand the way a business works and the things that a business does to ADD VALUE to the products they sell and suddenly the BD kit looks quite attractive.

TheFauxFox 11-12-2013 10:52 AM

LOL, 2SlickNick. My dad LITERALLY just came up to me and said "Hey! I was wondering if you would be alright with selling the go-kart after your science fair experiment?"

So..I think I'm hopping aboard the band-wagon of "ditch the spiderbox" LOL.

So...I guess I'll sell it for about 750... anyone near me want it? :D

zman007007 11-12-2013 01:40 PM

what you said Dave is so true. and maybe dad is tired of hearing about the cart and is going to use the sale of the cart money for new tires on the car. LOLLLLLLL

TheFauxFox 11-12-2013 01:46 PM

Nah...LOL. He was just thinking about it and doesn't like the prospect of INSTALLING the reverse kit... Nor does he think that it was a "good idea" to get a kart without it installed. Apparently, the fact that WORK is needed on this frightens him. :p

zman007007 11-12-2013 01:47 PM

there are 2 carts now within about 25 miles of me for sale. one is a carbide for $600 and it looks pretty good. the other one I think is a carter talon and they are asking $750 for it.

zman007007 11-12-2013 01:49 PM

I thought you were the ace mechanic, not dad.

TheFauxFox 11-12-2013 02:08 PM

XD Zman! I just saw the Carbide for 600!!!! I am KICKING MYSELF RIGHT NOW
:buttkick::blackeye::buttkick::blackeye::buttkick:

That is a great deal!!!! But I have to keep the spiderbox until my experimentation is done (should be by a week or two from now hooray). So... let's just hope that a good lookin kart like that carbide comes along.... damn. soooo painful.

and as for my dad, he is NOT the "Ace" mechanic, and neither am I. I just seem to have a bit more knowledge when it comes to this stuff. He was just upset at the prospect of "disassembling the engine" and worrying about parts breaking, etc etc etc.

But after running the numbers, here's what I get.

If I keep the yerf:

HD Ball joints = $99
A-Arm reinforcements = (local guy will do) $100
HD Spindles (uneven) = $95
Reverse = $299 (currently 249, but I'm sure the SECOND I get another 150 saved up, the price'll go up...:bs2:

New hubs/rims/tires (front) and back tires = $200

Price of parts = $780 or so

Total price (including kart) = $1450 about

If I sell this one for the same price I bought it (700) I could look for a Carbide and just wait it out....and then I'll probly just need some tires.

Price of parts = $200 or so
Total Price = $900-1050 depending on how much the kart is selling for. I am already considering that Carbide near you, zman, sold. No way it'll still be available when I can get it. I saw a Carbide in the Ga. area sell for 900 is about 2 days time...so I can assume for 600 its GONE. lol

Will update on what happens now.

andrew1320 11-13-2013 01:21 AM

Wasn't the price $199 for the BD reverse? I was about to get it then I realized it went to $250 :(

SYCARMS 11-13-2013 02:08 AM

I think they did go up in price but Chinese goods have been rising in price due to our week economy and dollar as well as china's weak economy.

zman007007 11-13-2013 07:30 AM

yes, it was $199, and I bought one while you and fauxfox was talking about getting one.

FYI in your search on CL you have to be smart. I check CL 2-5 daily for good deals.
When searching type in all these possible choices.
150cc, 150 cc, gokart, go kart, go-kart, gocart, go-cart, go cart, buggie, buggy. I found my carbide under Gokart.

2SlickNick 11-13-2013 01:34 PM

also, this is the time of year when people need money and are not riding the buggies as much due to winter. So..... cheaper this time of year.

so, after you have already told everyone that you paid $675 for it, now after you are done with all your mad scientist test on it, you want more for it.

TheFauxFox 11-13-2013 03:38 PM

I saw some go for 800...so lol. I just want to break even, I CERTAINLY don't want a profit off it. LOL. IDK about SC and NC areas, but it's REDICULOUS how much people pay for karts. I saw a super beat up HH (forget the model, but it wasn't a tiny one) go for 1200. It's crazy, but this is a spiderbox, and if I say 675, I think I'll get some good buyers.

eventually
