Not sure if Carter was using the sym engine in 2008 in all models, but it should either have markings on the engine or you can check your owners manual. If you mainly want low end for climbing the first mods should be to get more air fuel to the engine and get more exhaust out. To accomplish this you would get rid of the factory ait box and replace it with a UNI or K&N air filter at the same time you would open up the exhaust which you could call me so as to determine which muffler you have, and also rejet the carburetor. You would also either mod the cvt with lighter rollers, heavier torque and clutch springs or replace the stock cvt components with a performance variator and clutch. this could all be done within your budget. Once you do these basic mods and realise the performance gain you will be wanting to mod the engine. If you have any questions you can call me at 662-301-1563 to discuss in further detail. TOM
