Either way it's pretty cool.
With a long enough chain you can still get some twist/pivot out of it. Not just up and down, like most live axles mounted to a swing arm. It will be more like an automotive rear end with a drive shaft.

The further you have the front sprocket away from the rear sprocket, the more you should be able to twist without the chain falling off.
