From looking at your pic it appears the valve indeed hit the piston, if the tensioner was still installed your chain is stretched, and ditto pour some fuel thinner or like down the ports making sure not to spill outside of port then lift head to view chamber side of valves to see if any fluid leaks. I would also put a strait edge across the head to check for warpage. More then .003" the head should be shaved. And as long as your in the engine check the rings as well.
