I never liked the idea of 5/8 axles, mine got ditched for golf cart hubs and axles. pricey unless you have some handy. I'm pretty sure metal and at least one or 2 others went with the trailer hubs and had to come up with some way to space and lock in the bearings because of the issue you mentioned. as far as running all the way through the spindle, i don't think it's necessary if you're a decent welder. My axles are welded perpendicular (with matched curves) onto the surface of 1/16th wall cro-moly tubing and have been through hell and a half already.
