Default Rear axle bearing seals

I took the rear axle off my ASW Carbide 150 to change the sprocket size. I noticed that with only 450 km on this Kart that the outer axle seals were chewed up. I took the outer seals off to change the seals and discovered that there was no grease in the housing so the seals had been running dry. The housing was full of grit from the seal failure. I mentioned this to my dealer's service man and he said this is common, the Chinese put in a water based grease which dries up and disappears. Sounds a little far fetched to me, since when I brushed out the dust the seal housings were sparkling clean. My guess is that since this failure happened in less than 450 km that there never was any grease in the rear shaft housings.
