Default Gutted exhaust

Does gutting your exhaust help any or does it just tick your neighbors off?

i've heard different opinions on this subject. i have my hammerhead stock muffler gutted and it is a little louder. whether it gained me anything....who knows. since it runs fine the way it is, i can't see spending the $300 on the HH250 performance exhaust. back pressure is the only thing that would concern me. you need a certain amount of it for good performance from the engine.

it will give you more power and will be louder
my old stock one had 3 tubes on exhaust side
of muffler with 1/2 circle tubes over each one
no packing at all the 1/2 circle tubes were like
beer can material i grabbed with pliers and pulled
right out

It will depend on the type of muffler you have in the first place. If it is a straight through, one you can see daylight through, then no! Thats as good as it gets. If the muffler is a baffle type, has a long tube inside that bends back and forth, then finally exits the pipe then yes, gutting will help but the noise level rises to the edge of obnoxious. Most stock 150 mufflers are a baffle type. It is better to swap for a straight through design muffler. Use a straight through muffler that has a 1 &1/4" inner dia. use a pipe reducer on the intake side to fit it to your stock lead pipe.

Somebody told me that a louder exhaust makes you believe your going at least 5 miles faster.
I'm waiting for my new "straight through" type exhaust, while the original was a "baffle" type, so I hope ckau is right.
