Blown stator?
I was out a few weeks ago riding down a trail and my engine just happened to die. When I tried to restart it, my battery was dead! It wouldn't start. That was the first time that had ever happened. Frustrated, I walked back home and came back a few hours later when the engine turned over JUST fast enough to get it started. When I got it back I charged it up with a charger. That was a few weeks ago. A few days ago, I was out riding in the evening with one of my little cousins with my lights on. After about 30 or so minutes of riding, I just happened to get out and noticed that my lights were super dim. Normally they're REALLY bright. I took it back to the garage immediately and killed the engine and when I tried to restart it... it was dead. I recharged it again but I don't think it'll last long. So, what do y'all think is wrong?

It could be the battery, fuse, rectifier or stator. Pull out the meter and start measuring inputs and outputs...

Well the battery isn't recharging when the engine is running. Where do I begin?

1. Measure battery voltage with engine off: 12VDC or more
2. Start engine and remeasure voltage: More than step 1, but less than 15VDC 3. Measure stator voltage while engine is running: More than 12VAC If #1 fails, charge the battery with an external charger and then let it sit overnight off the charger and measure again. If the voltage drops, the battery is bad. If #2 fails, first check your main fuse with a meter. Visually checking the fuse can sometimes fool you. If the fuse is fine, check #3. If #3 is OK and fuse is fine, the rectifier failed. If #3 fails, disconnect the stator from the rectifier while the engine is running. If the voltage is now good, the rectifier is bad. If the voltage is still bad, the stator failed. |

Wow. Thanks for all the help. I'll get back and tell you what happens
