Default throttle linkage 10 hp Tecumseh

What is the reason for the throttle cable going to this linkage?



It seems like it would work to hook the cable directly to the vertical arm in the picture, but there must be a reason for the extra linkage?

Don't know why!! Where do both the linkages go? One is pushing and the other is pulling.I see the idle screw and a return spring.

One rod goes to the carb, the other to the governor.




I've got other issues now, I smoked the jackshaft bearing. Really, I found the problem when I saw smoke coming out of the jackshaft.



I had to grind part of the bearing race off of the shaft, the sleeve around the shaft is chewed up, but I believe I can re-use it.

Is it 5/8" dia.?Northern sells a jackshaft kit w/bearings & sprockets pretty cheap.Are you thinking of re-using that shaft? It's toast with all that blueing.

It is a 5/8" shaft. The picture is of a sleeve that was around the shaft between the two bearings. I haven't been able to find a new one, don't really know the purpose of it. The shaft itself looks fine.

Here is another picture of the sleeve or spacer that was around the shaft. Notice the 2 bearings that welded themselves to it. I haven't seen one in any parts lists, so I'll try to dress this one up.

I understand now! the sleeve keeps the bearing seperated.With all my jackshafts I've used bearings with a lip on one side that slips into a piece of pipe to hold them in place.Good luck with the repair.Are you having any fun driving the beast?!!!

There is a ring on the bearing that holds it in place, you can see it on the tire under the trashed bearing, so maybe the sleeve isn't as important.

It's finally warming up enough to ride, we are having a blast with them. The Honda clone engine in my son's kart is great, here is a link to a video with his in the snow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HQzbznB1yo Thanks for all of your help!

His kart sounds and runs great,good job on the engine swap.Nice to see him out playing in the snow.

His kart goes great in the snow if it's not deep enough to bottom out in it. My kart with the rear differential is helpless. My kart has dual rear disc brakes, if traction is a problem, I think it would be pretty easy to install a split break system like some tractors have. Put 2 pedals side by side that I could link together for normal use, or separate the right and left brake to make power go to the other wheel. The wheel base is too short for as wide as it is to install a live axle, I wouldn't be able to get it to turn.

You're right about the need for the differential and short wheel base. Nice kart.

Usually there are some long springs involved with the linkage hookups which allow the governor to force the carb butterfly partially closed at full throttle. These springs are "balanced" so one can overcome the other.

It doesnt look like your gov was removed because I dont see a return spring. Without a return spring, these engines would go to full throttle upon start up with the gov removed.
