Where and how to get larger axles?

So I have started my own FrankenBuggy project and as part of this with relocating the cushdrive, etc.. I'd like to extend the rear axle.

Here is what I am dealing with right now, anyone know where I can get a longer axle like this from?

had to run earlier, i now see they' don't offer the length your after. any though as to getting a second axle and cutting/joining them to get the legth you want? Don't know if a tube coupling the pair at the center would get in the way of your drive sprocket etc ...
