comet torque converter/CVT on manco hyper
i am attempting to install a comet cvt that metalstudman1 helped me with, on my sons manco hyper. i dont have very many tools with me here in North Carolina so it is going to be interesting.

to remove the jack shaft and its carrier i had to unbolt the motor and raise it a bit off the mount, removed what im guessing is a thin sheet metal heat guard(black). had to pull the left rear tire off, the brake hub and the wheel/ axle bearing. i am currenting waiting on the wife to get back from the store so i can go get a new saw blade to modify on of the sleeves over the axel that help keep the sprocket moving left to right. needing longer bolts to mount the rear pulley and its mount to the motor.

still getting used to posting the progress on here. I dont know the exact names for most of the parts just yet, and trying my best to decide the right times to take pictures so this will help someone else. so i apologize for this thread being rough cut. if you have specific questions please do ask. thanks

One picture already has ... or at least given me an idea that means more work for me ... I like the fact that the manco has a jackshaft tensioner on it. I'll be adding one of those to my yerf.
otherwise, don't sweat it, if something gets stuck or doesn't seem right, don't force it, take a picture and ask for some input. What i'm curious about is why are you removing the axle parts and sprocket? You should be putting the clutch on the engine shaft and the driven pulley on the jackshaft next to the sprocket. I take it this never had a Torque convertor and there's an alignment issue? |

I'll also toss in a tip that i've subscribed to for years in every shop i've worked in and at home. Clean the life out of everything before you work on it and as you pull the parts. It makes the work a lot safer and easier.

yes for alignment. the sleeve in the picture i need to measure and cut so the sprocket will line up. metalstudman1 helped me a lot with all this. but i need to take the extra from cutting and put it on the other side of the sprocket to make up for the slack. and thanks for the tip, im trying to keep everything clean and in a small area( i have a really small garage, and have an area setup for a dog having puppies in a couple days!)

had to do some cutting to get the comet to fit without buying a longer chain.

Yes, you can cut the fins. Very common for people using the comet TAV on minibikes.

finished!
alright, finished it up and spent a good deal of time today getting it to start. but i won the battle. this entire project would have taken me much longer if it wasn't for the help from metalstudman1. thanks a million!
instead of cutting the factory spacers that slide over the axle, i found some washers to split up on each side of the sprocket. so i can keep the comet to put on a different kart when this one gets used up. so i can put all the factory stuff back on it. this little thing hauls me and the seven year old around now. i recommend these comet torque converters! i think i was more excited to have the kid on it than he was. again if i am not making any sense to you please ask specific questions. i am very new to small engines. guns and explosions are my thing.

next it needs tires that are a little taller. these tire measurements are similar to a car correct? 145(width)/70(side wall)-6(rim diameter)?

bootboy,
glad to see you get that all worked out. did it really make a big difference in speed and how about low end torque ? i just picked up a hyper for my kids the price was great but i think it lacks a little power especially from a stop. |

Thanks. It looks like the one from bullit line is a clone of the comet tav. Too bad I live 30 min from where comet was.
