A lot of personal stuff got in the way of my usual business but.... I'm back. My newest creation : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_qoW6tEdoU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGtttMrnGAI I'm having with the ball joints staying in one piece on the rig Anyone have any suggestions. I have a welder and some tools so just wondering if there is anyway around backordering the bdx super strong ones for 100..... Thanks guys. Oh yeah the creation is half yerf dog half 86 honda atc 250sx 3 wheeler. 5 speed, reverse, electric start, all that jazz. Just got bored and decided to build it lol. Thanks |

Are the ball joints coming out of the hole in the plate? or just breaking? With the added length of your Spiderbox now the ball joints are under even more strain than they were when it was stock & they wouldn't last very long then.

It just broke. Upper driver side. It broke.that top.casting.around the ball in half. IM also.having an.issue where when backing up passenger side tire slips out.........is this a common problem with the Yerf dog steering rack?

Yes- the ball joints failing was one of the reasons Yerfdog went belly-up from lawsuits. The HD ball joints are a big improvement over the stock ones but they also fail over time. Most people have changed over to a Heim joint as a repair. If you use the "search" feature on the main page you can find numerous threads/posts on this modification.

Ok thanks I appreciate the info.
Any idea on the steering rack? Can't figure out why the right tire keeps coming off track.....

I was also wondering if I have to replace my spindles for the heim upgrade? or is it good enough to stay with the stock ones?
Thanks

The Heim modification is just to the A-arm, the spindle remains the same using the 3/8" hole where the stock ball joint bolted. |

When backing up from time to time the passenger front tire gets traction and just pulls that side of the rack out causing it to just drag the tire.
I'm not sure if this is a common problem with the rack and pinion on the yerf dog.

I'm not aware of this being a common problem- when you say it drags the rack out- does that mean it pulls the rack out of the pinion box? or does the tire rotate beyond it's turning radius and you have to rotate the tire back by hand for it to steer again?
The rack & pinion on the Yerf's are very solid units and I've never had one fail. But now when ball joints get very worn they can let the tire rotate past their intended radius and can't be turned back by the steering wheel. |

When i go in reverse it pulls the tires sideways. I have to get out and correct it. IM not sure if its the rack or not. Did you mean the tie rod end by ball joint or the ball joints on the a arms???

The rack & pinion isn't the issue. Could be either ball joint- the tie-rod end is usually the culprit, too much orbital movement.

Alright thanks. Im pretty sure the whole.front.end.needs to be freshened up.

Lookin good. Check for any accesive play in the steering. although I have never seen but 1 pinion go bad , its possible that the right inner tierod could have slopp in it. Turn the right tire by hand left to right and see if the steering wheel moves in sinc with tire, if not then determine at which end the play is.
