Default tools needed for Carter and Howhit motor

what tools do I need to pull the flywheel, and other tools I may need to work on a Howhit and a Carter motor? Such as the tool needed to pull the flywheel, magneto, and also I would need a spanner wrench to hold the flywheel and clutch on some sites I have seen. Would these tools be available from Tom or would I have to look elsewhere? On Ebay they have the flywheel puller that says it is a 27mm x 1.00 male. would that work for mine? any help would be appreciated. zman

you need the basic gy6 flywheel tool, I forget the thread pitch/dia. but it's essentially the same for all the 150s. the spanner is a good idea, easy enough to make one, or buy one. that's about it for these engines special tool wise.

What clutch are you asking about?

The starter clutch uses the spanner wrench, and the drive clutch is just a large metric socket.

There's a small gear/spacer on the crankshaft that's used for kick starting the motor. That can be a PITA to remove. You might need some type of outside puller to remove that if you plan on splitting the cases.

Otherwise X is right. You only need the flywheel remover tool and the starter clutch spanner wrench.

NOTE: I THINK the starter clutch (spanner wrench tool) nut is reversed thread. So look into that before you go torqueing really hard on the nut.

ok xlint thanks for the info. how about checking compression on these engines, is it the same as a mower type engine, just screw in the compression tester and spin it over.

When doing the comp. test make sure your throttle is fully open. I would first check valve adjustment. Most believe the valves will clack as they wear but the opposite is true for they actually tighter due to seat wear and eventually will hold a valve open killing the compression. They do make a socket for the spanner nut but I have yet to find one worth the money for they break easily. I got my spanner from Enco .com but they are 6" long and need the use of a cheater bar. I do stock the flywheel pullers, cost $23.00 plus shipping. These are the good made in the USA and are properly hardened so the threads won't strip out. I will look up the spanner number when I get a free moment so you will know what to order. There is a trick to getting this nut off, give me a call 662-301-1563 and I can explain how this is done. Also if doing a total teardown, the older GY6 with external rev have a gear behind the variator which needs a special puller to get off. The internal GY6 eliminated this gear.

hey Tom thanks for all the advice and info, the guy I bought the Helix from, said it cut off while running. I have it firing now, cdi was bad. I"m about to tear into carb which is only a few months old. any ideas?

Is there anything wrong with the carb? Have you done any mods and if not do you plan on doing any.

hi Tom, the carb. is brand new, but that doesnt mean it couldnt be stopped up from sitting the last 2 months. I cant see where any mods have been done and I dont think he would have had the knowledge to do any. I bought a new seat to go on it, so I will check the valves when I have the old one off. He said it quit running while they were driving it. I just want to get it running right now.
