Default Hello from Dayton, OH

Hey guys I just picked up a 150cc mini buggy/kart. I'm new to building on these but not new to working on engines, doing mechanical projects, or even small engine maintenance/service. I used to own a lawn and landscape maintenance business. Thanks for having me and I hope to learn a lot.

First order of business: build the 150cc or swap it?

welcome aboard

swapping it means time to undergo a lot of fabrication work and a decision to go irs or stick with the swingarm and to beef up the back and front end and cage depending on how big you go.

If you want to have much ride time within the next ohhhhh 1 to 2 years ...

build the 150 into a screamer and have fun ....

one alternate route with that is to keep it as is and buy pre-bored cases and pretty much build a complete custom bbk with the trans gears and cvt system you want in it then swap it for the stock engine. that way you can ride and build and have a backup.

Heard of haspin but not big maple... I go to MUM. I bought this as something for my little brother to enjoy and for me to build on a little. Mine has a title and stuff I wonder if I can get a speedo and get tags for it and make it street legal.

Maybe once I build it a little we could have a buggy day at one of those places. I've seen quite a few in the Dayton/Cinci area. I bet there is a group of guys. I know tons of Middletown/Madison TWP ppl that do ATV's and such.

I tend to side with X on the swap, had I known all the little annoying aspects of my swap, I might have stuck with the 150cc, and went with a big bore, head work, and a big cam, but I still loathe CVT's, and would have sunk the same $$ into all the mods, maybe more, considering all the trial and error with the weights and springs.

Next time, I will have a working machine to drive,THEN down the other one for a swap.

Welcome Greenmachine. I have this same buggy and I agree that out of the box its not the most impressive. With some bolt ons and a little work I have become pretty impressed with it. It is among the heaviest of 150s which makes it ride nice. Opening up the intake and exhaust, adding a ported and polished and milled big valve head, and an A-12 cam, along with rejetting the carb to match to new flow has made a tremendous difference on mine. I can only imagine it with a big bore. Check out the thread "most common mods for gy6 150". It has lots of details on pulling more performance out of these buggies. It is not a 350cc but dont give up on the lowly 150. It can be impressive. Mine has pulled this heavy buggy and me (nearly 200#) and my dad (180) up a long steep hill at around 22mph. Before my mods it pulled me alone up a short steep hill and slowed to nearly 10mph after hitting the bottom at near full speed. The hill I pulled with my dad was hit from a cul de sac at the bottom accelerating up the hill. Check that thread and as always, if you have questions just ask.
