gx 390 header
is there anything to be gained other than noise by replacing the muffler on a gx 390 with a header?

As with any 4 stroke engine, it will breathe better for sure, but at the cost of noise and possibly irate neighbors. It would really benefit in conjunction with a free flowing intake and air filter. There are add on mufflers for some of the headers out there, or you can aim the pipe toward the ground to deflect some noise.
The stock 'muffler', or flame arrestor, is nothing more than a direct flow blocking baffle, to keep flames and sparks from exiting the engine, so opening or eliminating that restriction will help.

I agree, open'er up. The candy cane headers are good for a balance of torque and hp, or make your own straight pipe with a flange for more top end.
