Help me change my sprocket
Guys,
I'm planning to change out my axle sprocket from 32 to 39. Anybody have a good "How To" on this? Do I need a bearing puller? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Should be pretty simple, but a little time consuming the first time around. Remove the wheels and probly the left side hub, unbolt the caliper and remove from the rotor, no need to disconnect the lines. Remove the chain, unbolt the axle bearings from the hangers, then either slide the bearings off, or slide them out enough to drop the axle out of the swing arm hangers. Replace the sprocket, and reassemble in reverse order. Set of wrenches and sockets, hammer and a jackstand or two should be all you really need.

Well, got everything done except for the chain. I need 3 links added and I can't find anywhere to do it. Only thing I can find is a surplus store that has a 10ft chain for 24 bucks!

It is normally advised to change the chain with the sprockets. Given the size of the chain and the age, I would probably go ahead and buy a new one. Trying to match up links is tough, and normally spend just as much on those as a new chain. If you don't mind waiting, you can find low priced chains on ebay complete with master link.

I cut three links off the old chain and used both master links to put it back together, no problem at all, took all of 10 minutes.
I have a thread about it on the other site with pics.

I ended up just buying a whole new chain. 24 bucks got me enough for two full chains.
Funny thing though - either the sprocket is warped or my driveshaft is bent because the chain tightens and loosens as you turn the driveshaft. It's no a huge deal but it will increase the chances of throwing a chain. Overall I'm happy. Fells more peppy. Didn't have a chance to really put it through its paces - crapy rainy weather.

Both my buggies have the same chain slack and tightness as it rotates. I tried to unbolt the sprocket and rotate it a quarter turn to reduce the problem but it was about the same. I rotate the axel to the tightest spot when adjusting the chain and haven't had any problems. It might be from the fact that they are made in china and precision isn't as important.
