The "evil" twin!!!
As most of you know I have 2 identical 04 dazon 150 singles that for the most part I really love, but I do believe the blue one is out to drive me crazy this year! over the winter I put a new cam chain, piston,rings,etc. and had it purring like a kitten, when out of the blue it just lost fire. I metered the stator and it shows no fire, so I ordered and installed a new stator,coil,&cdi and still no fire! Im no master at elec. wiring but cannot personally find any issues, but I might have to put this one in the shop and bite the bullet!!!

Ignition switch? I noticed mine was starting to stick this week, not stuck on, just rotated a little too far to the right. Jump it and see if you get fire.
I see a pulse pick up there too, but never heard of one failing. I know you likely checked, but make sure you have the correct CDI, too.

Ground wire was the culprit for me once.

Yea "Yota" I thought about that, but I did try jumping across the relay, and still nothing! Nick I've been trying to chase down the culprit in the wiring, but nothing yet! I might just resolve to getting a connector kit and rewiring the whole thing, the current wiring is rather dated! P.s. "Yota" the ignition switch is a little "ify" and will be replaced!

The good thing about your situation, is you have another whole buggy for test parts. Might think about swapping the switches, or other components one at a time.

Yep, been there done that, I tell you this one is really bugging me! it must be a broken old wire somewhere!!!

Ok so I have good voltage from the stator to the CDI, but still nothing to the coil! I dont get it there are only 2 wires from CDI & rectifier to the coil and they are both good and intact! I even took the rectifier off my red one that I know runs and put it on the blue one and still nothing!!! so what next, this is a true PITA

Are you referring to the sparkplug coil? If so maybe that coil is bad.

To or from the coil? You might see a blip of voltage coming from the CDI to the coil, but unless you have a good quality meter, you might miss it. If you have a min/max setting, that is the time to use it. I agree the coil may be bad, I have heard some being bad out of the box. The coil is pretty easy to read, resistance across the two leads, then resistance between the leads and the plug wire. They should show similar resistances. The CDI, however, is much harder to diagnose, almost to the point of using a known good part in place of it.

Ok there is definitly a related problem here, I have been trying to chase this issue down by trading out parts from one buggy to the other and using my meter to make sure Im getting good readings on the parts and now the red buggy is showing the same problem!!!! Im pulling my hair out here! never had such issues like this before!

sorry to get off topic, but I just saw this thread & got a great big smile on my face when I noticed the title. I called my old Drag car "The Evil Twin".
Is it real or is it Memorex?? Last edited by Rarerat; 03-23-2014 at 05:17 PM. |

Just a quick update, I finally got my red buggy up and running, but I think I messed up my "new" ignition switch in doing so! I have to jump across the relay to fire it up, but other than that, its purring fine again! now I get to tackle the "evil" one!!!

Are most of the ignition switches for these buggy's low budget and kinda cheap, cause I've been thru 3 of them in a year n a half!
|

|
||||
|
||||
That's odd... I feel like it shouldn't really matter. Like switches are switches... Are you getting ones that are OEM, or no name stuff? Cuz I guess you can make anything cheaper and lower quality nowadays...

I would say yes. That would be the part most likely to fail, constantly being used and open to the elements. I am considering moving mine, or trading it out with another key switch, possibly from a quad. They seem to hold up better.

You should have 3 wires going to your ignition switch. Try putting silicone on those wires. Should protect it from the elements.after reading this I think I'm going to do that.

The rainbow!
I've tried them from 3 different supplier, not going to drop any names, OEM and aftermarket with the same results. Its always the same the ACC part of the switch remains good, but the actual ignition stage always goes out! As a "fix" I went to Autozone and got a simple push button switch and installed it to the relay. So I still have the ignition switch to turn on, and then push the button, that way I can still remove the key as a small "security" measure!

Ok, I officially hate the blue buggy now!!! I spent today starting over from square one, going thru the "steps" and came out with the same end results! I'll cool down over night, and give it another go tomarrow, after that its off to the shop!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have a kill switch and if so have you checked it?? If you don't have the switch is the CDI wired for one and could that be grounding somewhere. And.......whats up bear. Long time.

How's it going "Stak", good to hear from ya!, The wiring is stock on both buggy's. It has the ignition switch, and a toggle switch, I've switched it out with the one on the red one that I know works and still nothing! I'm really frustrated with this one! Not really willing to give up yet (old & stubborn), but getting closer all the time!

Dk if you can rule it out or not, but the ignition switch (3-wires with soldered wires to a plug) on the baja "likes" to click back to the acc position from the run position. It's only a tiny bit of movement between the two positions so i didn't see it clicking back, drove me nuts thinking i had no idle carb issues.

Well, two out of three aint bad! I've got my Roketa gk-17 purring like a kitten! i think I'm gonna sell this one. My red dazone is running as strong as ever! and I've given in to personal defeat on my blue one! I'm simply gonna have to send it off to the shop!

hey bear one more thing to check,does the flywheel on these engines have a magnet in them like a riding mower does? I haven"t really got into these engines too much yet, other than building the top end on one. so I am not sure, but if it does may sure the magnet is still good. stick a screwdriver to it and see if it sticks. I had a riding mower one time, the magnet went bad out of the blue and about drove me crazy before I found out that was what it was.

||||

||||
There is a magnet. As well as a pickup. Either of which could be bad. I would lean toward the pickup not sending timing signal to the CDI. If you know the CDI and coil are good and you have power to both then the signal is whats missing. Worth a look.

No clicking noise, and the fuse is fine, maybe a 3# hammer is needed?!!!

Bear. Did you bypass the ignition switch? Also, if the fuse is a glass tube type, make sure to ohm it out. I personally chased a ghost in an older car because the fuse blew in the metal cap, and was not visible.

Jman, yours sounds like a solenoid problem. Try jumping the solenoid and see if the starter will engage.

would a bad solenoid cause the buggy to just shut off? and have no electric power? I tried the screw driver trick along the starter solenoid and got nothing

I ran out to the shed to take a quick peek again around the solenoid again and the red wire that connects to the solenoid and the other end of it to the fuse looks like it melted on the solenoid and the wire looks to have a tiny bit of the wire exposed maybe that could be it? I keep hearing that little click sound to when I turn the key over but still no juice anywhere. I wont be able to actually work on it till maybe sunday and if not next weekend dam wedding to go this weekend.

Yota, I use "Z-line" type auto fuses, and I can do the "screwdriver" trick and get the buggy to turn over. I've got good juice to the CDI, but loose it after that point to the sparkplug coil, I'm still working on it!

Jman replace that red wire. Disconnect the positive from your battery first.

Sorry guys I haven't had any time to even touch the "evil" one lately, with my daughter graduating from H.S., and getting her set up for college. Lots of paperwork and correspondence, not to mention running here and there! I think maybe this week though, and I'll try all of your suggestions!

Yea Zman I checked the magnet & all is well there. I can do the "screwdriver" trick and get it to turn over, but still no spark to the plug! I've tried 3 different sparkplug coils which I know work, cause I checked them on my red buggy. The same with the CDI's I have run the wiring so many times I can do it in my sleep!!! Keep checking the classifieds cause this PITA could end up there!!!

If worse comes to worse don't give up and sell your buggy. Do what I do take it to a local dirt bike mechanic. So don't get discouraged.

At this point I just can't stand to look at it anymore!!! I put it away till I get to take it to the shop. I called my guy's over @ the shop & they said they where swamped right now with all the people wanting "spring" tune ups on there rides, & I should hold of till the end of the month to bring it over, cause they wouldn't get a chance to look at it till then anyway!
