Noob belt question
Hi. I've got a Carter spx with a comet 20(?) converter. I noticed the old 1/2" w belt was damaged, so I amazoned a replacement using the part number on the old belt. I received the new belt and its 3/4" w. In fact, when I search other vendors using the old part #, all the belts are 3/4" or wider than the original. For the heck of it, I installed it on the cart, and it makes it move at idle... Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated!

u need to adjust the motor . there should be a gap on the belt and driver pulley i thank its like 1/8" when you squeeze the belt around the shaft .

if the old belt is 1/2" then there is 1/4" of wear on that belt . im surprised
it hasnt shredded. all the 20 and 30 comets use 3/4 belts the only diffrence in these belts are the lengths witch you measure the shaft to shaft distance . but i would say your good there just need to move the motor to get it set up right Last edited by DRAGONFIRE81M; 08-27-2015 at 09:31 PM. |

Yeah they wear on the sides . Torq converters work by squeezing the side of the belt and making it Climb the sides of the pulley to change the gear ratio witch gives you a low range for take offs and climbing hills and a high range for top speed

Interesting. Appreciate your input. Wish it was easier to adjust, but at least I don't have to reorder a belt.

I stand corrected
I stand corrected. Adjusting the engine doesn't seem to affect the distance between the pulleys. It only seems to loosen or tighten the chain.

Probly going to need some pics . Sounds like u have the set up that's not adjustable . Also is there a brass bushing on the motor side that the belt rides on when idealing . If there is it needs some dry lube like graphite .

Thanks for sticking with me, dragon. I uploaded a pic of my set up. I don't see an idle bushing. Looks like the belt just goes pulley to pulley.

Your belt looks loss enough but it does look like your missing the bushing .

As far as adjustment goes, if you need to change the C-2-c of the driver/driven pulleys, you need to loosen the jackshaft AND engine mount bolts and shift the jackshaft back. A lot of times, there's very little room to do so. You have to be careful with the realignment of the pulleys, beign a little off will chew up a belt pretty fast. |

if you're not giving it gas and the belt is engaging, then your idle might be set too high.

Hey, thought of that too. Don't think I can get it to idle lower than it is. Will take a look at that again tomorrow. I'm getting &%$# frustrated!

idle is not adjustable
Hey. I down loaded the manual and looked over the carb and the idle seems to be set at the factory and not adjustable. It still moves/engages at idle, but runs great other wise. Any other ideas are appreciated!

I don't know if you found this already or not, but this is a breakdown of all the parts on the Carter SPX 2936.
http://kartingdistributors.com/pdfs/.../2936-4015.pdf Your new belt looks correct to me in the pictures. Make sure you have the belt installed in the correct direction. I'm pretty sure you know this, but the TC 30 belt is angled on one side, and should not be put on backwards. We own a few Carter SPX karts. We didn't run them this year, but I can look at our karts this weekend for a comparison to your pictures if you'd like. If it is too frustrating to figure out your problem, you could have a bad or worn torque converter set up. Perhaps a previous owner messed with the springs. New, complete TAV 30 / TC30 units run about $100 on ePay. Your chain should be #40. They're not Comet units, but they should be just fine. I'm not sure if Comet is still around. Luke |

Your belt is correct. Your setup also looks like mine. I don't think adjusting the chain will make a difference.
I'm pretty sure your hub TC needs to be disassembled and cleaned. Videos like this will guide you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9yPHtfJO9w Here is a manual for the comet: http://www.*************/PDF/Comet_TA..._Converter.pdf Last edited by shook1; 10-17-2015 at 06:11 PM. |

While your cleaning everything inspect everything, make sure the inside if the pulley is smooth and doesn't have any steps in it, no flat spots in the rollers things like that
