My company also owns the Buggieholics Anonymous. I hold a degree in Buggy phycology as well from ACME University. I would be more than happy to schedule a session over the phone. My fee is based on a per hour rate. Never had a client call back for a second session, so as you can see I have a 100% success rate. BA, one call that's all.

Sidebar q:
I see you added side protectors to your buggy, and go fender-less.
Was that due to the fenders did not work/broke, or?

Hey ckau , I think hobby and obsession are defined by the amount of $$$ invested . $20,000-$30,000 on a tricked out side by side , $50,000-$100,000 on a bad a** sand rail or crawler , now that's an obsession . Guess I got a mini obsession .

understood, I was just trying to pick x-bird's brain on his method of the side panels, as none on stock frame.
Since the frame flexes (torsional) needs material and fastener method that can give/flex slightly with it so no stress cracking as the top/bottom frame will move so slightly relative to each other.

Side bar: I worked for GM way back in 1986 and was part of the team that added X-braces to the Corvette so we could launch the 1986 Corvette convertible, to somewhat keep the convertible torsional stability in same league as the base 'Vette. Spent many months at Bowling Green KY, way before Saturn came there.

Cool background mtbdudex--I used to write for Vette.
The side panels are mostly to prevent debris intrusion, very early on i slid it on it's side into a brush pile and stopped with a thick branch a couple inches from impaling my chest. In the races, they keep a lot of mud out of the the interior.

With the amount of travel (16 inches f/r) I have and as softly sprung as I run it, there isn't any flex from normal or even heavy riding .... the panels are bolted on mostly only in the corners and with oversize holes, the panels would just flex and not crease or anything of that nature if i did tweak this thing. When it was a bolt-together yerf, it was a shake, rattle n flex pig. Fixing that is what started the lunacy as to what it's become. There's an old youtube of a kid riding a 3203 where you can see the frame bowing over some washboard bumps. I fixed a lot of cracks in the frame and figured out and tackled its weaknesses through a lot of T&E.

Fenders have been off and on more times than you can imagine, as i change suspension designs they either stay off awhile, then get modded or relocated. if i'm modding/testing I tend to leave them off as they get in the way working on the front or back. The old front fenders now are just mount plates for the LTZ fenders.

Before i put on the fronts, I caught (literally) an old, heavy rusted door hinge that the front tire threw back at me in a corner. Snagged it out of the air headed right for my face. Unless i run out of time before a race, I prefer to have them on.

the nerf bars have saved the rear axle/rims countless times. I just wasted a front a-arm and opposing tie rod eating a 3-foot tall stump with the right-side, nerf on the left took out a chunk of a tree that the back end flew up into. that particular hit might have flexed something somewhere, but aside from the trashed upper A, tie rod, heim and rear fender, I haven't spotted anything amiss.

As far as rigidity goes, I did add diagonals to the original remains of the yerf frame, which was just the base floor pan tube, the mid rail run and the front short hoop. It gets more bracing effect from the 2x2 1/4 wall rear main tube at the base and fully perimeter welded floorpan along with all of the added cage work. There's still another set of main diagonals i want to add to support the center of the front upright hoop along with an upper lateral. A lot of the cage and the doors in the pic in this thread are gone.

Nope, cutting off the flattened bolt-on mounting sections lowered the front hoop too much. I had a new one bent up at my buddy's shop when I put the new front end tubing structure on it. New one is a bit wider up top with the tubes running parallel. Old one was a little narrower up top with the tubes tapering inwards from bottom to top.

you are close though, I did keep the rear hoop.

3:13 in this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyfpcBigXXg shows the initial remains of the yerf frame. I've since pretty much eliminated all of the old rear rack structure along with moving (several times) the vertical tubes below the rear hoop.

That sounds therapeutic . We used to run year round . ATV's , ATC's , Mud Trucks in the snow and ice . Was always a blast . But this old age/poor health thing put a damper on that . If I could ride from home base I'd blast around on the good days . Our only riding spot is 20 miles away , so loading , trailering , and usually group rides ( family ) turns a ride into a project . To make things more complicated I'm a retired bodyman that spent the last 35 years battling the effects and damage from road salt . And a fanatic for washing and maintenance on my machines ( three hour rides on Sunday/four hour wash and detail on Monday ) AINT HAPPENING in the cold months . No way are my toys gonna sit covered in road salt rotting away !!! ( I only have open trailers )
SO IN THE MEANTIME...I WAIT .... .... ....

10/4 SYCARMS , serve's him right , that would be Righteous ! Unfortunately not doable , I'm just a small fish in a small pond . But I do get the satisfaction of the fact that him and his friends that are going ( all with children ) Were all being dragged out to the mud 20 - 25 years ago every weekend by yours truly , hopefully while they're sitting around the fire at Tall Pine's that weekend they'll " have a beer and a burger " for the OLDKID ! I rest my case .

Just hang some small blocks of ice from the front brush bar and go fast. How hot are you guys there? We have been upper 90's with 86- 94 % humidity but there is a constant breeze.

About 4 years ago my brother was down here visiting. The whole week the temps were above 100 degrees with 90% humidity, the hottest I've ever experienced. I had to make a run to the dollar general and suggested we take the buggy. That was a big mistake. The drive there and back was as if my oven was set to 500 degrees with a fan in it blowing the heat on us. My brother said nothing there or back. While in the dollar general my brother kept looking through the aisles. I asked what he was looking for, he said oh nothing just looking. We walked around for 30 minutes. The whole time I was ready to go but was waiting on him. We got home when he finally broke his silence. He said, next time take the f@%&in truck with air.

Naw , not that far yet . Got a good camera , got a good phone camera , take lots of pictures , but just jumped into the computer / digital age a few years ago when I retarded oops retired , slow learner / old dog new tricks ... Plus last two years only using the phone for computing with like 5 G a month allotment . Used to be one of those " I don't need a computer " now I don't know how I'd get by without it . Slowly but Surely ... Don't call me Shirley .

Well my cellphone is a flip phone with antenna 1991 model. No texting, no surfing the web. I don't get service at my house no matter which carrier I use. My son has ATT but to make a phone call he would have to walk to the mail box 300' from the house during an electric storm while wearing a tin foil hat and then only get 2 bars. Two years ago ATFwas out to do a compliance check, he received a few calls and when he called back his neither phone would work, he has 2 phones with different services. He had to walk about 400 yards to get service but the calls dropped. He went to his SUV and got another phone and made several calls flawlessly. When he was done I asked him what service he used and he said I would not be able to afford it at $5.00 per minute for he was using a satellite phone. I have 2 land lines at the house and shop, my cell I only use for emergency when I'm on the road. My phone is getting tired but I'm hesitant in getting a new one since I really don't want to be chipped to where my whereabouts are known to who ever. Not that I'm doing anything wrong, just don't like the idea of having tracking on me. People just have no idea the privacy they have lost due to computers and cellphones.
