Clutch Springs And Main Spring Selection
Hi,
I am wondering what you all recommend for clutch springs and main springs or what you are using personally? I currently put in a 1500 main contra and 3 2000rpm clutch springs. What do you think of this set up? Is it best to have the main spring lower rpm and the clutch springs the same or higher or am I backwards? Charles

More of my question is also, what is the theory behind how the clutch part works being that you have the main large spring and then in the clutch the 3 small springs?
Seems to me that if the main spring is lower rpm then the clutch springs then the engine would try and already shift up before the clutch engages.

The variator along with the clutch pulley control the shift ratio just like the auto trans. in a car. The 3 clutch shoe springs control the clutch grab similar to the torque converter.

Some of my confusion is do you want the Main spring to be higher or lower then the 3 clutch springs in rpm? Right now I have 1500 main and 2000 clutch. Is this a good combo or do I have this backwards? What do you recommend as ideal for buggies?

I was never a fan of the red springs except in the case all you want to do is climb monster hills. The red clutch springs allow the clutch to slip longer which creates more heat in the bell and shoes with no performance gains. I would go with yellow for all around driving. If the motor has the power( cam and ported performance head) which the stock form does not then run the stock Blue springs.

So if you have opened up the exhaust, jetted and other performance parts, you recommend 1500 rpm main spring and 3 1500 clutch springs?

I prefer a very stiff clutch pulley spring. This will downshift your CVT quicker and also lessen belt slip under load. The down side to this spring is that too light variable weights may not allow the belt to climb completely to top of the pulley and reduce top speed or put it at an uncomfortably high RPM.

When you say stiff clutch pulley spring are you saying the main contra spring? Also what is stiff, you mean 2000?

Yes, I use the red 2000 rpm contra spring in the clutch pulley and 12g slider weights in the variator to get the best pulling power. Although I have sold my GY6 buggy, I use still the same combination in my scooter and can beat most cars off the line at traffic lights driving in the city.

I too prefer the red spring along with weights on the heavy side. This combo allows me to back off the throttle during the apex of a turn thus causing a fast down shift of the cvt to a lower gear then having the gearing to pull stronger out of the turn and climb back to high speed sooner. As Sycarms stated the stiff spring can be hard on a clutch. This on/off/on the gas technique doesn't allow the rpms to drop low enough to disengage the clutch but rather forces the clutch to grab at speed so the opportunity for slipping is greatly increased. if your driving style is more of a cruising or climbing then I too would recommend the lighter spring.
