Carbide Oil leaking from tranny Nipple
I have oil leaking from the Nipple/Vent tube underneath the transmission/gear case. Anybody have a clue what causes that. From what I can tell, you cant remove it and put a new one on.
Ive attached a picture of the vent tube as well as a link to a short video. I have searched and searched online and cant find anything. I may be searching using the wrong terminology. Any help would be greatly appreciated. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuAaXuK_U1o |

I never had that style but based on the location : A vent would be on the top , looks like a trash drain for the belt side of the case , water , condensation , etc. In your case a little gear oil leaking from the clutch shaft seal possibly . Pull the belt cover or find a schematic to know for sure . Most importantly check your gear oil level , and change if you haven't already .

If My suspicions are correct and that is a trash drain for the belt side of the case : Assuming it's a small oil leak , and your transmission calls for 80/120 gear oil : Don't use synthetic oil as it tends to find leaks . Try straight 90 weight with some STP , Motor Honey , etc ( Thick Snot ) or one of the Lucas type leak preventative additives . You could top off the transmission for now with any cheap motor oil to establish how low the oil level was and get an idea of how bad the leak is . Than drain and refill with the expensive proper oil .

Pull the cvt cover and look for oil inside. Could have a leaky seal either worn out or the case vent is blocked letting pressure build in the gear box.

Thanks for the responses. I checked gear level oil and it was very low. Ive unscrewed the cover but cant get it off. I assume I have to remove the exhaust? Do I do this by removing the springs that connect the two pieces of exhaust pipe?
And im pretty sure I need a new gasket as when I pulled it off (as far as I could get it) parts of the gasket fell to the floor. |

Yes you will pull the muffler by releasing the 2 springs. The gasket can be replaced using RTVon the cover and letting it completely dry before putting cover back on.

I don't even run a gasket on my cvt cover. Don't see the need as it has cooling vents so it's not sealed anyways.

The vents are a controlled ventilation, sealing the cover prevents alternate air flow helping to contain the airflow cooling the CVT.

To remove the springs im guessing just take a pair of needle nose and pull/bend the u shape where the spring attaches in the little holes?
Will they go back on just as tight/hold it snug? |

They make a tool which is hooked on the end. I doubt of you could get a tight enough grip since springs are strong. I have used a small pair of needle nosed vice grips. As long as you don't distort the spring it will be fine. Another option is to remove the complete exhaust then you don't have to mess with the springs.

I can't get these springs to move for nothing. Can you please provide a link or a pic of the tool you're talking about?

just pull the whole exhaust, just 2 more nuts at head.

Nevermind about the tool. I used the I had from my kids trampoline. And my wife wonders why I don't throw much away. Anyway, these are two pics right after I pulled the cover out. Is this normal? What should I be looking for?

You'll have to pull the clutch and variator with belt. If there is any oil on belt replace belt. Behind clutch and variator are seals. You also need to check to make sure vent hose is not plugged.

The belt has little pieces of crush and run on it. We live on a dirt road. I really gotta pull clutch...etc? This is all new to me. But I wonder if the small pieces that were on top of the belt fell onto it when I opened it up, trying to remove the cover before I removed the exhaust.
The belt is dry Last edited by kellsta; 03-30-2018 at 07:48 PM. |

WHOA ... Like SYCARMS said check the vent . pull hose off and.blow thru. it . put hose on. remove. fill plug blow thru it . Is it clear ? Clean around and under clutch , look for leak . put it on jackstands , cover and exhaust off . Run it ( only a couple minutes) look for leak . If it's very small drain trans and fill with the 80 weight like I mentioned earlier. Run it again , check for leak .
Leak gone , silicone gasket , cover on , call it a day ! You might need exhaust gasket , a leak at the head isn't healthy for engine .

As far as You know it might have the original Chinese fish oil in it , or who knows what someone might have dumped in there . The right oil is essential !

Vent tube now
OK, so I had the cover off, belt dry, took off vent tube and blew through it, shot air through the fill hole...
Having family/kids over for Easter and wife wants it running. Dump some new oil (both kinds) in, put the cover and exhaust back on it so the kids can ride. Well guess what? The kids never touched it. So I get home last night look under it and no leak from the trash/drain tube. I fire it up, run up and down the road, do some donuts..etc. Pull back to the yard, shut it off and take a look at the trash/drain tube and nothing but its now dripping oil from the vent tube up top. It drops a few good size drops every second or so for about 5 seconds, then slows down would just hang there until heavy enough to drip off (in the pic). I put a bottle underneath it/overnight. Enough as one good drop in the bottle this morning. When I filled it up with gear oil I squeezed it in until it started running out if the oil. 10w 40 until oil level was half on screwed in dipstick. I never got to run it on jacks/cover off. Any idea why its now leaking from vent tube? |

Ummm, The 80/90 wt gear oil goes in the trans . Vent hose is usually 1/4" off of top of trans . Engine ( crankcase ) 10/40 wt. oil goes in the fill plug for crankcase . Hose in the pic. looks like engine breather .
You didn't , did You ???

I put the 1040 in at the dipstick and the 8090 in the screw on the side where the stuck is pointing. That's the tube it's leaking from.
I'm about to take it for a spin |

How much oil did you put in transmission?

Rode it 5 minutes
Rode it hard for about 5 (let it warm up for a few). It runs good. Parked it jumped off and went to look at the back. Had a steady small stream of oil coming from top vent hose, stopped by the time I got my phone out. In the one pic you can see the stream slowing down. Just went to big drops, now to barely dropping anything. Maybe two ounces total from what I saw

I put oil in tranny till it started to leak from fill hole. I then let it drip b4 I screwed the plug back in. My thinking is I can't over fill it, once it reaches the fill hole, if it's overfull the rest will drain out. Is that the wrong line of thought?
Btw, thx for all the help y'all |

It holds 750ML just short of a quart about 25 ounces.

When We were referring to the vent hose , to make sure it wasn't plugged , building pressure , possibly causing your transmission to leak , we were talking about the vent hose on your transmission . The hose in your picture looks like a large breather hose for your engine crankcase . Maybe somebody can steer you towards a manual / guide , so you can identify , and get on the same page . Stay with it , you'll get it .

My fault , seen your pictures again , been getting them in random order . Get your last post , than an hour later get your previous post . Was sketchy on my end . Well seeing You have the right viscosity oils , and not over filled .... see where you end up from here . Your original problem of trans gear lube leak seems to have stopped based on what You mentioned . --- trash drain ???
Good Luck .

Also ... ( like I said , I never had a complete Carbide ) but in most Buggy's the vent hoses run to the airbox which is mounted on top of the swingarm , above trans , engine . Your picture looks like it's running parallel and down to level with trans . Maybe run the vent hose up higher . Inline fuel filters make good breather / filters for vent hoses .
