Drum brake set up

Newbie. Restoring a go kart for my kids that has a brake pedal and drum brake but no other brake components.

There is no anchor bracket for the brake band. Is it possible to set up the brake band without one end anchored? If so, what's the set up? In case it's relevant, the braking system appears to require a cable, as opposed to a rod. I think. The brake pedal has a hole that goes front/rear (presumably for the cable) and not left/right (which I'm guessing is more likely for a rod).

Pictures of the strap and the kart would help. Does it look like there was an anchor spot that broke off? I've seen brake rods that go straight through the peddle, and I've seen some that have a short cable to a rod.

Pics would help. I know on some mini bikes the anchor point is a bracket that the axle runs through and holds it.

How should the brake cable (or rod) be set up? Sorry can’t quite see the hole on the pedal for the cable/rod on this pic but you get the idea. Also the return spring?

I may be missing something here, but the first picture is of the centrifugal clutch, not the brake. I have seen brake/clutch combos, but they use a bracket. To me, the brake lever looks like the type that is used with a hydraulic master cylinder? But I guess it could be used with a rod that has a 90 degree bend on the end?
The Brake/Clutch kits I've seen use a cable though.

I know what you're trying to show, very likely set up like the backyard kart style. spring loaded rod goes to short but stout cable. cable connects to band that goes around the drum on the axle. band pivots only on one end. if you look, you should find welded round hole stop tabs for the rod and the cable with slots for the cable probably on the side or center by the driver's seat.

The first link was very helpful. My kart doesn’t have a frame near the drum where the band can be anchored to so this bracket mounted to the engine case seems like the ticket. These pics from the link show it well.




Here is my kart with the mounting holes the bracket would go on. So I should go with something like the above, right?


I’m guessing it requires a brake cable (not rod) which comes with these kits.

So... next question. What kind of brake pedal return spring should I get? See pedal photo upthread.

Ahh I see. That kit had this photo and it all is starting to make sense. Much appreciated, liduno. I think I have enough info to start ordering!
