Default Upgrade follow-up

Original Project:
http://buggymasters.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5604

Finally got some time to play with the buggy a bit. Since I had to cut away the top of the cooling shroad to fit the bigger head in, I decide to upgrade the cooling a bit (because I like to over complicate things). Spliced the wires from a TrailTech fan kit to a Setrab oil cooler. Tossed the banjo bolts for the oil ports on the engine case and replaced with 12mm to AN adapter and made some oil lines with AN swivel connectors. I still hate the rear shocks as they feel too soft, but whatever. I hope to take it out for a good hooning this weekend.

That's looking good! I see you have mounted the oil cooler up on the frame. That's a good place to get the full benefits from the cooler. there are a few issues with mounting the cooler up high. Firstly, the oil level in the case, the cooler and lines hold approximately 25% of the oil in the motor. This means while running, the oil level in the case is below optimum operating level. adding more oil to case means when you shut down oil in the lines and cooler drain back to the case and you got a overfill problem.

secondly the fittings in the case half are tapped in the galley that feeds oil to the head. Starting up after the oil has drained from the cooler and lines. there is a delay of oil pressure to the head while the lines and cooler are filling. I don't know if there is a real issue with this but my instincts tell me the head is running dry too long.

The cure for all this is to simply invert the cooler so the inlets are on Top. the cooler stays full and primed. fill the cooler with oil then the case and life is good.
I installed a T-fitting in one of the cooler outlets to give a place to connect a oil pressure gauge. that gauge shows you what is happening.

I'd been thinking the same thing. I'm going to weld a new mount for the shifter and move the oil cooler to what used to be the passenger foot well/leg area.

Took it for a good blast today. I put on a bigger output sprocket during the rebuild and it still has plenty of pull. Don't know top speed yet, but I got scared at 42 mph, as the suspension feels iffy even at slight bends in the trail at that speed. Tiny bit of bog at about 1/4 throttle, but rips after that. Up hills no problem. Hate the shocks, things get spongy and weird at speed..

I had run the valve cover breather up into the "cargo rack" hoping that vented oil would drip back down, but I'll have to add a little catch can or something as under hard driving it builds up in the filter and drips all over everything. Honestly, I'm just glad the head is getting plenty of oil

After a heavy rip around the trails, the catch can sounds like I'm making espresso, but no more dripping oil.
