Default loss of power on a carter 250

I have a Carter Talon 250 that i just bought used from a friend of mine he wasnt aable to fix it either he put a new clutch on it thinking that was the problem. What happening is that i can get it running fine with the drive wheels off the ground but once i put a load on them it wont go hardly at all any help out there? Also how loose should the belt be on the clutch

i would check the varitor and weights
the belt is a tight fit on "notch" with varitor off

Does it rev when the wheels are on the ground and simply doesn't go anywhere?

Does the engine cut out or die under a load?

The engine will rev with the wheels of the ground. Once I sit in it it just barely wants to go spec. with a slight encline on pavment.

The engine won't rev with a load on it. And it does cut out and die with the load but will run good with no load

the carter 250 has a manual choke, make sure its off, the belt fits snug but not real tight. remove the air box and press the throttle to the floor and check to see if the slide is coming all the way up, has he changed the jets, adjust the air/fuel screw , check chain tension

Okay i was wrong so lets start over what i have is a carter Gsx 150 IIR talon. I am still havn the same problem tho. It seems like my belt is to loose the belt on it is the 743 20 what size should be on the cart. like i said before the cart runs great with the drive wheels off the ground but once i sit in it and give it gas it doesnt go. the rpms dont even increase at all with the pedal to the floor. unless the wheels are off the ground. so where should i start and also im triing to find a manual for it where to get that i've looked on the Carter Bro. website and they didnt have that specific manual on line.

is it stock or have you done any mods to it? the belt should be 743x20x30, check to make sure there is fuel getting to the carb

When on the ground and giving it gas does it bog down like it is under load and just won't move or does it act like it is not under a load at all? Without seeing it, my first thought is to get in that carb.

Since it is actually a 150cc, that is a standard GY6. I think I have a manual here somehwere. I'll look for it and if I haven't already posted it I will.

Here is a service manual for the Helix which is a GY6 as well. What will be different is the transmission since the Helix uses an internal reverse where as most others use an external planetary set.

It doesnt really bog down under load it just acts like its staying at a idle. if it does bog its slighty also when i tried to adjust the air screw it didnt seam to do anything at all. and i do have to use stating fluid to start almost everytime

Yep...get in the carb. When it is in the air, the fuel requirement to make it rev is much less so if something like a main jet was partially clogged, it will still allow enough fuel to get past and rev. Under load (i.e. wheels on ground) there's just not enough fuel to get it going.

Did the buggy sit for a while?

Also make sure to drain all the gas and replace with fresh fuel. When tank is empty look inside using a flashlight to see if you have trash in the tank. TOM
