Where's the idle mixture screw at?
Someone asked about this so I decided to post a picture of where you can find this at. The trick is that some carbs have a cap over this screw. The idea is that the factory adjusted it to where they wanted it to be set at and don't feel like you should be messing with it. However, therer are times when you flat out need to! For example, when you re-jet for any reason at all (think mods) you will probably need to make some adjustments. If yours has a cap on it, it looks like a solid piece of metal there however the fact is it is simply a cover. Take a small drill bit and drill right into the center of it JUST BARELY BREAKING THOUGH THE CAP as to not actually drill into the screw behind it. Then thread a sheet metal screw into the hole you just drilled, and pluck the screw (with cap attached) out to remove the cover. Then you will have access to the adjusting screw. Attached are a few pictures showing where the screw is located which is on the choke side of the carb.

ya, that's the correct place for a helix. Mind you, that's not the actual idle screw, just the mixture screw.

Initially, I'll start out with 1.5 turns and go from there.

The reason you find the mixture screw capped or plugged is not due to the factory. They are mandated to do this by the EPA under the clean air act. The factory in order to import their product into the USA has to comply to the polution standards for co2 and hydrocarbons set fourth by the EPA. As of 2009 many shippments were held up in customs due to the fact that the calibration of the carb could be changed which they said was in violation of the clean air act, so the importers such as Kinroad, Hammerhead, Roketa had millions if not billions of dollars being held up at customs until they resolved the issue. Many engines using the slide carbs had to be sealed by melting the carb filling in the mixture screw cavity, others which could be capped were capped. So don't look at the manufacturers as the source of the problem for the problem lies with the dispicable parasites from hell we voted in to office. We all need to get much more active in what is going on in this country cause if not it is going to get much worse very quickly especially if cap and trade is passed cause if so you can kiss this sport goodby for all you might be able to afford to buy or even drive are peddle buggies. Please everyone get involved with what is going on now in this country before we all wake up one day and regret. This is a great thread. My son's Kart has a Tecumseh 6hp that runs great but stopped idling yesterday. It starts with a couple pulls they after 10-15 sec dies. Restart... same.
I messed around with idle but to keep it running I had to hang onto the frame to keep it from rolling away by itself. I pulled the aircleaner to see what was going on and it is getting gas beyond the priming squirts. I sounded like it was sucking air. Perhaps the idle mix is off. Not sure why that would suddenly need adjsutment. Any other ideas for a Kart that won't idle but runs fine otherwise? Mike |

mike has it sat for a while? The Tecumseh's have one of the crappiest carbs ever. Especially if it is the one with the red primer bulb. If it is, they make a replacement one that has a manual choke that is a heck of a lot nicer. All of the ports to the carb are nearly impossible to clean. If it sits for any period of time, that's when it starts getting gummed up.

you must indeed be the buggy master. LOL
yes it is the one with the red priming bulb. I'm guessing it sat over the winter and maybe the guy we bought it from started and had it warmed up a bit before we got there. It had a nice new air filter and what smells to me like fresh gas. I don't think it was gas from last year but who knows. Anyway I gave her a few shots of carb cleaner and blipped the throttle. squirted again and opened it up a bit. After a few cycles of that I was able to turn down the idle rpm's without it dying. Mission accomplished. when we go for shocks I'll ask about the manual choke replacement carb. Mike |
