Yeah... I was gonna say the same, minus the 12 pack...LOL
I think it's a good buggy, but talk about a WIDE OPEN SIDE if you roll that thing (with it being so skinny) it would do almost nothing to protect you. Although I think it's quite cool, and for once if you buy it, you'll have a buggy you don't have to diagnose! Anywho, I'd go for it and try to get $500...

yota, I'm looking at it like if you roll, a 5 point doesn't stop ur head from swinging around, and I know that's why we wear a helmet and all, but you roll cage holding ur head/helmet in (I think) is better than your head swinging out to the side and whacking the ground...

You can weld a side bar on both sides to reinforce the cage and keep you head in place. As for seat belts and helmets we put 4 point cam lock belts on both our buggies and always wear a helmet. All it takes is a ball joint to break or a steering rod to break and you could flip.
That buggy would be fast with a big bore ported stroker in it. And you could flip the rear wheels to get a wider stance in the back, probably wont work in the front due to the valve stems hitting the calipers. |
#13
|
||||
|
||||
Johnny, that's what I was thinking, just weld a bar. Of course for me, I can't do any welding on my kart :sad:
Hey! As you have cams, what's the diff. between cam lock and regular 4-5 pointers?

In all my years riding and playing on toys, I know I would rather have my head moving and possibly hitting dirt rather than being slung into a welded piece of steel, that has zero give. If you are that concerned with head movement and possible injuries, then wear one of these, or these, or stay home. Also, on helmets, make sure you are wearing AT LEAST a DOT approved full face or 3/4 helmet and eye protection. A SNELL approved helmet is better, but DOT impact certification should not be looked past. These provide the impact cushion needed to prevent damage to your skull, including concussions, brain damge and death. The most important thing is a PROPERLY INSTALLED AND TIGHTENED HARNESS. I personally like the 5 point variety due to the anti-submarine belt, which keeps you in the seat, and keeps the belt where it needs to be.

It doesn't have to be rough for the neck brace to help. After track days I'd drive home in a lot of neck pain from the weight of the helmet and all the cornering Gs. Only found out a little more than a year ago that i have arthritis from the base of my noggin to mid spine. Wish i could afford a HANS, but the horsecollar is a must have nowadays even for lapping around the house while testing. Somedays i break the rules and ride without a lid while testing, but that just comes down to how much or little advil i have in me at the time.
BTW, could have sworn that i posted saying i didn't like the looks of this particular ride based on the cage/frame construction, looks as weak as my '03 in stock former--or even worse. |
#17
|
||||
|
||||
Yeah a side bar to the head would suck, maybe put a side bar below the shoulder. The neck brace is a good idea because when we ride my neck hurts for the first day until we get used to the helmet.

That first alpha seems to be sold. The last one seems more realistic on the price, but with no reverse, that might be a deal breaker. I would keep to design that is more common than that, like crossfires and such, that way you can still get some parts without headaches.

Just a note about head support and something I,ve been thinking about as another one of my "redneck" engineering projects. How about two straps coming down from the top of the roll bars on each side(note my buggys are singles)& two snap rings mounted on the side of my helmet to keep it from swinging around to much and it could possibly support the helmet weight a bit!? any thoughts?

Me, personally, I don't like the idea of anything on the frame holding my head. The HANS device or the collar support keeps you and your head moving along the same plane. If, some freak accident, like a seat belt failing, and something is holding your head to something else, that can be way worse than fatigue or whiplash.
There are several reasons why that type of device is not being used by the racers, and the ones being used currently, are the way to go. Now, addressing helmet weight. I know from years of riding street bikes, that helmet weight and neck fatigue makes the difference between a great ride, and misery. About a year ago, I decided to upgrade from an HJC to a SHOEI, and boy what a difference. I went from dreading a ride over 20 minutes, to looking for reasons to ride. Now, for random knowledge, HJC and SHOEI are the same brands, except one is considered entry level, and the other a much higher quality for serious riders and racers. Considering the above, you may want to look at different helmets as well, I know I will be looking at some off road SHOEI's before long.

Except for the Winchester HH...wow that thing is either completely rusted out where the pictures don't show, or the seller is insane.

Yea I seen that listing this weekend to Nick, but I too think its a little steep priced! there is a guy in Dayton, Ohio that has a 175 & 250 single he wants to sale, but he's asking $1500 for the 175 & $2000 for the 250!!! I may be a cheap but that seems a bit pricey!!!

i have both a sidewinder and a 175 engine. i had planned on mating the two but it looks like i'm giving the 175 w/ my crossfire 250 swingarm to a good friend who wants to hop up a baja dune 150 i found him( probably another build thread coming). it'll basically get all the parts i took from the now crosshammer. he does all my computer work for about nothing and cost on parts so i figured i'd return the favor. plus he just offered to update and host my website w/ hopefully a forum and chat feature which would be cool, so whatever i can do to help him get addicted, why not. the sidewinder has pro's and cons, i plan on doing something w/ the chassis, probably a custom build to flip. the pro's- super lite, howhit engine (at least mine was), the familiar yerf style swingarm, axle& hubs, front and rear brakes. reverse would be easy to add. the cons - 1" frame and chassis..... 1 flip and it's tweaked. the familiar yerf swingarm, axle & hubs. no reverse. cage is narrow. stance is narrow. the dazon raider is a much stouter buggy. the 175 engine as mike said is tough to find parts for. it is a clone of the honda CH series engines that was found in there ELITE scooters as the CN was in the HELIX. the CH"s came in honda form as an 80,125,175 & 250. the parts are not interchangable w/ the cn, except for the thermostat housing, although they look similar. i did find that the output shafts for 150's do work as i used a yerf shaft on the BABY HUEY yerf i built. this would lead me to beleive the adding a 150 reverse box would work. i do plan on finding this out in the near future. as an engine it is a screamer and hauls butt. definitely and upgrade from a 150, and not much slower than a 250 if it is infact slower. speeds of mid 40's are obtained w/ confidence. opening clip in this video is the yerf w/ the dazon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edvddIS_2JQ

There are better 250's out there than the cn/cf platform, IMO. If you can weld and drill(we know you can) then you can DIY a better set up, and save some money at the same time.
