Default Need A Little Help with 150cc Exhaust Upgrade

I recently purchased a Tomberlin Crossfire 150 with a Howhit 150cc engine. I purchased it for $300, due to the fact that it would turn over but wouldn't start (the Stator needed to be replaced). I have done several upgrades to it, but am having a heck of a time trying to find a decent exhaust that will not break the bank.

My son drives it around our neighborhood quiet frequently so, I need an exhaust that is on the quieter side and will not get me any noise complaints. I also want to keep some back pressure on the motor so that I do not loose the low end. We do a lot of trail riding in some pretty hilly areas. I need the torque to be able to make it up the hills, but also need a more open flow exhaust for the added gain in power.

All of the exhausts and mufflers that I find are either specifically made for a scooter and are too short, open, loud, or cost around $300. Anyone have any suggestions?? (I would also like to keep my exhaust on the driver's side of the buggy)

Here is what have done to the buggy so far:

* Upgraded to a racing CDI with no rev limit
* Upgraded to a racing coil
* Upgraded to an iridium spark plug
* Upgraded the petcock, fuel line and filter
* Upgraded to a racing clutch and bell housing (with 1500 springs)
* Upgraded to a 115mm racing variator with 10g sliders
* Upgraded to a Kevlar belt
* Upgraded to a UNI Filter
* Port and polished 24mm carb
* Upgraded main and slow carb jets
* Polished intake manifold
* Calibrated valves and tappets
* Upgraded to an A12 performance cam
* Upgraded the oil pump
* Upgraded all lights to LED
* Changed ignition to push button

I hear that the Hammerhead performance one is nice but is loud.

As you noticed, most are made for scooters and have a bend to go to the right side of the engine, which is opposite of buggies.

What I did was take a stock exhaust pipe and welded a new muffler to it. It has a spark arrestor as well. I got exhausted trying to find an exhaust for the buggy.

The hammerhead exhaust is by far the best, but most expensive option. You won't be disappointed but your wallet will. I recommend buying an FMF moto cross muffler with a spark arrestor and getting it welded onto your stock down pipe. Weld it yourself or go to a muffler shop or mechanic shop for help. I'm surprised there are no direct bolt on perf exhausts for say $100 to $150 for these buggies.

He said he wants it to be quiet though and I have heard the Hammerhead one is loud.

I was talking to Sycarms here and he had mentioned that he had a few pipe and muffler setups left that you may want to contact him about and see what he can offer.

I personally have the hammerhead exhaust and love it. Yes it is loud, but has a awesome sound to it. It's good quality. Looks good. Makes more power. But is pricey yes.

JerseyDevil,

Does it have spark arrestor for offroad?

What is price for complete exhaust gy6150 buggy?

Also do you offer pipe only for those that already have a muffler they want to use? If so what is price?

Interested, but those YouTube videos seem too loud for riding in a neighborhood!

Maybe he can quiet it up for you. If not what I had done is take a scooter one that was straight through and rewelded it to pipe.

JerseyDevil, can this exhaust be quieted down? It does seem a little loud, especially for my boys to ride it around the neighborhood. Is there a removable silencing mod that can be added?

You seem to have a good understanding of how exhaust systems work. What is it about this, or any other muffler, that helps retain/produce low end torque?

Is the O.D 1-1/4" for a I.D of 1"?

Anything to open up the exhaust for performance is gonna make it louder. Anything to silence it is gonna hurt the performance. I'm not sure about these buggies but most cars, atvs, and such the factory exhaust is about the best of the fine line between the sound and performance. I haven't done any testing on these to know they are different but living out in the boondocks I don't have to worry about the sound. Heck used to run my open exhaust drag truck at 2am and nobody cared.

What you might do it have a small cheap muffler that attaches on the back of the buggy after the performance setup that is easily removed. Put put around the neighborhood with the quiet setup and once you get out on the trail where you need performance take it off and uncork it. I've seen this done on ATVs where during hunting season they want it quiet but off season they want to race their buddies.

If you do go offroad, you will likely need to have a spark arrestor to comply. Otherwise you are taking a risk of heavy fines, etc.

I have seen people make spark arrestors out of sink drain screens.

depends on the wall of the tube.
for 1 1/4 to have a 1" I.D. it would have to be .120 wall which is thick and heavy. would probably add 2lbs at least to the pipe and muscles in my arms from the bender.
i dont even use that for roll bars.......
.095 is the wall thickness on a cup car @ 1 3/4"
our buggies cage are .089, which i will use from time to time or .065

.089 is 2.26mm or 11/128"
.065 is 1.65mm or 1/16"
.120 is 1/8"
.095 is 2.41mm or 3/32"

not my buggy, i sold it to a friend who rents a bay from me. it is the "rockstar energy" buggy i made out of a new TM XRX150, the thread is here somewhere.
it is stock w/ a uni, 10g rollers and spring ,130 jet , cdi and hoca coil and a 12 tooth engine sprocket. top speed normally 35 according to the speedo, he said 37mph but it got to 30 a lot quicker than w/ the stock pipe.

I think if you can figure out a spark arrestor you will sell even more.

Ckau,

I can't remember what the reason was, but I heard it is not good to wrap the exhaust pipe. I think it was from sycarms that mentioned it.
