Default Ncy 61mm head shorter than stock will chain fit?

Hi,

I am getting ready to build my ncy 62mm big bore bore in and 61mm nvy heads. However, I just noticed my ncy head is much shorter than factory. My concern is if my cam chain will fit?

Anyone have input and knowledge on this?

You might have to get a spacer. You will have to figure out the stroke and the target compression and order the right thickness. Might even have to stack a couple of head gaskets to get it spot on.

It is like anout 3/4" or more shorter
Is this notmal with ncy?

I hope somebody that has took one of these to the extreme chimes in.

Personally I cheated and just went with a bigger engine. Frankly I think most of us buggy guys go that route because we have the room. You might want to do like I did when I researched hopping up the gy6 and go to a scooter forum.

I searched around a few different scooter forums when researching. Just googled honda rukus forums. Those guys do just about everything they can to these little engines and have a pretty good clue on what does and doesn't work. Of course their slider/roller weights will be totally different from what we need in a buggy but everything engine wise transfers over just the same.

I started designing a rear frame to take a 400cc Kawasaki atv engine and then decided to just keep this one stock. By the time I would have chopped it all up to put that engine in it (and a 4x4 front diff) I figured I would be better off building a frame from scratch so that is what I'm doing. Just using my kinroad as a base design. Where I live here around the swamps I pretty much have to have 4x4 and a good winch.

I noticed on fleabay the other day they have the CN 200cc engines with reverse for about $700. No clue what it would take frame, wiring, and coolant system wise mods to retrofit one of those in a gy6 150cc buggy. Might or might not be an option vs atv or snow mobile engine swaps.

Neo,

I have three of these buggies. I have seen many people happy with the power output once they big bore, stroke and mod the other parts with performance.

My idea is to take one engine I have and do the 62mm big bore NCY with the 61mm head, port and polish the head as well as fine tune all the other parts to see if this buggy can meet the power I need.

If after building this first engine, it does not show significant power increase then I guess it is time to look at RZR trail or perhaps Trailmaster xrx 300.

If after building this first engine it does perform well, then I will build the other two up and have happy trailing.

It appears to me that finding a 300 or 400cc engine to swap to is not so easy to locate at a reasonable price not to mention the amount of retro fitting. I also don't want a clutch and for sure want reverse, which even makes things more difficult.

I'm sure many people are happy with them. I was given a good running 4 wheeler and thats why I'm going the route I am. Like I said I was researching doing the same as you. If this haven't landed in my lap I would be in the same ballpark as you. Truth be told If i wasn't given ($0, free, no cost) this atv 3 weeks earlier I wouldn't even own this kinroad. I would have built my own buggy from scratch. Once my son gets a bit older I'm sure we are gonna start on the boring and hopping up.

This 400 is clutchless and has reverse. I think you mean you don't want to shift gears and most modern ATVs are belt drive just like these buggies. Granted mine is auto clutch with manual shift but I actually prefer that. I prefer my regular ATVs with the same. I wouldn't even mess with it if it didn't have reverse. You asked what I was swapping in mine and I gave the reason why I quit the swap and started a new build. It should be pretty fun by the time I add the paddle shifters.

I suggested the CN 200 (same engine these things have in the 200cc version) because I know finding a cheap, running,and in good shape atv is like gathering unicorn tears. I also pointed out the one with reverse. There are ones without for about $100 less.

I am pondering the idea as well of a 300 or 400 atv motor if I can locate a few. I have posted in Craigslist for wanted.

Do you have images of your swap yet?

After speaking with Sycarms, Tom is very helpful, I found that I have an odd engine. It looks just like the common A case but has a 3-1/8" stud spacing rather than the normal 3".

He said it was a rarer utility engine having a taller cylinder and head. The valves are also longer and angled differently. It is also likely that the crank has two different sized bearings.

Another thing you will notice if you have this same engine is that it had 2 bolts to hold the cam cover rather than the typical 4. This engine appears not to have big bore or crank upgrades.

May have to change out the left and right case.

That's interesting. If I understand correctly then you should be able to punch that thing out to 232cc with no issues if you can find parts to fit that block.

Probably not because it is still basically the 54mm not 57mm. It is by my understanding the 57mm spacing is the one you an go that big with.
