Default registering buggy for street use

I have 2 crossfires and was wondering if anyone has already registered one of these for street use like you can golf carts. I already have a ins. quote from my ins. agent, for both of them. they would be used on streets with 35 mph speed limits or less like golf carts. are the faster buggies like the razor and such registered as a regular street vehicle or what.

In Georgia the law is they have to be sub 25mph so they're register as golf carts, and have insurance etc etc. Above 25 is illegal. Not sure how that makes sense, but thats how they roll (no pun intended)

Most states will identify your buggy like an ATV or OHV(off highway vehicle). I know this from researching Florida's laws and the Dept of Forestry rules.

The biggest road block is the VIN. The second is a bill of sale or certificate of origin. Best bet is to call the DMV and ask someone.

Just looked up the FL law for golf carts, and there are no provisions that allow their operation, other than crossing from one side to the other, for any length of time, unless the municipality has declared it legal, or is a privately owned road or property. We have a similar provision for tractors being operated on govt maintained road ways. They do, however, allow their use on sidewalks, for some reason.

I told him I could set the top speed where I wanted it to keep it legal. he seemed fine with that.

Might want to rethink driving your buggy on the street, I know it would be fun but I sure wouldn't want to tangle with some idiot texting & not paying attention while driving their car. It wouldn't be pretty for you or the buggy.

I forgot to add to my other post that apparently by OUR local ordinances (here in Alpharetta) that as long as it has a licensed driver, turn signals, wind shield (i think), mirrors and brake lights, and seat belts its road worthy (as an ohv).
Yea, I would check with the dmv/local police. Thats what my dad and I did in regards to riding it around our neighborhood.

I have the dmv form in front of me to fill out to register a golf cart. it asks for the vin, make and model, and the owner info. that is it other than where it will be operated. also that you swear it has ins. on it which it will once

I forgot where I read this (I'll look it up) but I found someone doing exactly what you were in regards to getting it registered (albeit with a 600cc if I'm not mistaken) and he had to fab up a VIN number as buggies (as far as I know) don't come with one... I'll edit this post later when I find it...

Default been ther, done that

Yes these buggy's do have a VIN on them usually beneath the seat or on the frame rail. As for getting them registered, well good luck! there is a thread in this forum that adresses this problem and the many different "issues" each has had in there respective States! I finally gave up here in Ohio and resolved myself to the fact that there are plenty of privately owned off road venues to choose from!

the only problem I have is I have to have serial numbers off 2 golf carts, that have never been registered to give to the dmv. It wouldnt even matter if they are junked as long as I have the serial #. I would need them to be around a 2006 and a 2008, that is what they are listed as on my insurance. they dont need to see the carts. they just check the vins to make sure they havent been stolen.

so does anyone have 2 carts around those years that would be willing to part with the numbers? it would have to be 2 carts that are name brands around the United States. I'm sure as recognized names . ie., ezgo, club car, and the like.

Zman,

I hate to say this, but I doubt very seriously that anyone will give you a VIN number. However, you might try the route I took to get my Yerf an off road sticker.

http://www.buggymasters.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4508

In this process the highway patrol inspected my buggy and looked at the numbers that I had stamped. They then recorded them and issued me a Vehicle ID number. I took the ID number to the DMV and they generated a VIN for the buggy. If you try and go this route, I can not stress enough the need for a jig to stamp the numbers. During inspection, they will be looking for any inconsistency. So if your numbers are crooked, spaced unevenly, or not in a straight line, it probably will not fly.

I also recommend that the numbers be stamped on a flat surface. Before I stamped the numbers on the frame, I experimented on some scrap round tubing. I found that I could not get a uniform stamping on the round tube, so I then looked for a flat area. Of course you always want to do practice stamping on scrap metal before you do it on the frame.

Don't tell the Po Po that I gave you this info

I may try to see if my carts can be listed as a LSV [low speed vehicle] here in S.C. I read the requirements and I don"t see why I couldn"t make that work somehow. I will ask my insurance co. how they have them listed when I call them. My carts do have vin numbers, but I don"t have any kind of paperwork on them. Does anyone have paperwork on any Crossfires they own?

Not a crossfire owner, but I did with my Dazon for this reason, AFTER I found out I needed one for the Yerf.

well went to the DMV yesterday and rather than try to explain to them what the buggy looks like I carried a picture with me. the young girl behind the counter looked as lost about what I wanted as a hillbilly at a broadway play. She says I will be right back, went and talked to a lady at the other end, and then disappeared into the back section. Came back out, talked to the lady again, and then came back to me. this all took about 15 minutes. lol She gave me a page for each cart where I have to apply for a title 1st. then she says they can"t handle that in the regular offices and it will have to be mailed in. I had to take pics of both carts from all 4 angles and pics of the vin of each.I even put a note in each package telling them what I wanted to do and so it is up to waiting to hear from them now. I mailed it all off this evening.

It also doesn't exactly help that most of the people working there (referring to the DMV) are working dead-end shifts and are bored and done with everything.... but ya know.

Pep Boys used to sell the Yerf-Dog and Baja makes. You did not get the MSO/CSO with the purchase, but the manual had directions on how to request one using your store receipt. Sams and Costco were the same way with the Tomberlins they sold. I believe Joyner, Carter and Hammerhead gave you this paperwork with the sale since they were only sold through motorsport dealers. Roketa was hit and miss based on the drop shipper you used. A local Roketa dealer would request the paperwork only if you asked for it...

I just might. But I would hate to pay them the sales tax on the new hammerhead if they requested a bill of sale.

I wasn"t asked for a bill of sale. the 2nd page is actually what I filled out and sent in, along with photos of each buggy from the front, back and both sides and a close up pic of where the vin # is located on the cart. I even put in a letter with each one telling them the carts would only run around 25 mph and I wanted to register them as slow speed vehicles, ie a golf cart. They are the ones who wrote dune buggy in as a model.

Yea in Ga the issue is if u register as a low speed vehicle u need insurance proof license etc etc etc because there was a "low speed cart" law enacted years ago... It's a whole thing. Technically these are considered low speed vehicles by law, but an officer told my dad all they needed was seat belts windshield turn signals mirrors brake lights and it was good to ride.

In SC to be considered a low speed vehicle it is not supposed to run over 25 mph, sort of like your average golf cart.
