Best tires for road riding?
Got a carter GTR250. I have a boy with autism and a 13 year old daughter. She loves the off road riding. He likes to cruise the back roads, gravel and pavement. Of course the road just eats up tires. Gonna get a new set of rims and tires, one for road and one for off. What would be a good hard, "on-road" tire? What brands should I look for?

I've been trying to find a set of on road tires for my ASW Carbide so I'll be interested in what others have to say.

This is what about 200 miles of road riding will do to those OEM tires on a GTR 250. Just flattened out last night.

4 weeks ago, been riding it almost every night. The little boy insists (my son) and the big boy enjoys (dad).

Dang... two hundred miles in four weeks? Wow. I've had my Carbide since last October and I've only got about 350 miles on it.

Riding on county roads are legal here and we have a lot of remote places. My boy is autistic. He lenjoys the vibration and motion. He also enjoys watching the scenery roll by. I discovered he also likes mud . We have "baptized" it in the mud a few times. The daughter would prefer hill climbing, so I need to keep a set of off-road tires to keep her happy.
I think I may have found an answer with ITP 12 or 14" rims and regular road tires from the local tire shop. I am waiting on a reply back from ITP on the centerbore size, as those rear rims on the GTR have a pretty big hole. I understand trying to get another set of OEM Carter rims is pretty hard as they have been on back order for months. |

Cool. My favorite thing to ride on are dirt trails.

most of the itp wheels will fit. the fronts will be the hardest to find because of the bolt pattern. if you go with 12 inch rims all the way around it would make rim choice easier

I have looked into the ITP SS212 rims, machined with black. Those are just too "sexy". As long as I can get my accountant (wifey) to approve the expenditure. This is where having a handicapped kid comes in handy.
Looks like I could mount Carlisle "all trail" 25x8-12 on the 12" rims. But those tires are expensive, at $370 for a set from my local shop. I know, I am buying custom rims but griping about the cost of the tires. I am told the "All Trail" tires are nice for both on and off road. But I am still concerned that they will wear faster than a regular steel belted radial road tire. My plan is to use one set of tires and rims exclusively for road, and swap out for off trail when we go offtrail, which will only be once or twice a month. Most of the time we will be riding the backroads. I am pricing 14x8" rims with standard 195/70R14 tires. ITP sells these as their "hard surface" kits. But I am still using the SS212 rim and just buying the tire locally, hoping to find them cheap. Anybody had any problems running 14" rims, other than break wear? Either way, with the 12" rims and Carlisle tires, or the 14" rims and steel belted radials, I get a 25" diameter tire on front and back. The GTR currently runs a 27" on the back and 23" on the front. Both should look quite "awesome" on the metallic blue frame. |

Here is the solution I decided to go with on the GTR 250:
14x6 4+2 4/137 and 4/110 rims, ITP SS212 machined with black We are going to use a 195/70R14 40,000 mile passenger tire. This gives me 25" diameter tires all the way around. Plus something more durable than just a hard off road tire. *********Power Sports was great in helping me. He is a Carter dealer. And I am going to get an extra set of brake pads for all that road running. I'll post pictures once we get them mounted up. |
