Default Best suspension mod ever.

I was looking at the difference between a hammerhead swing arm and my coolster swing arm. The axle on the coolster is way closer to the pivot point than the hammerhead. Needless to say, the hammerhead rode way smoother than the coolster.

I thought moving the axle back on the coolster would make it ride more like the hammerhead and oh boy! what a difference it made. I had put some honda recon shocks on the rear of the coolster, that helped but moving the axle back made waaaaaay more of a difference.

I cut the bearing mounts and one of the cross bars off the coolster swing arm, I welded the bearing mounts back on about 5 inches further back. I didn't want to use the cross bar over so I made a new one and mounted it kind of like a rear bumper.

Had to make some caliper mounts as they were connected to the the cross bars.

This picture isn't my buggy but you can see how close the tire is to the pivot point. Imagine the leverage if the tire is 5 inches back.

Makes sense, it's just simple leverage. the further back you go, the more it will work to cut the shock spring rate and smooth out the ride. It will cut into turning radius though.

No problems with chain adjustment or clearance on the rear cross bar?

I replaced the rear cross bar and shortened the chain. Turning radius change isn't even noticeable but it does seem to drift a little easier, which I like..lol

If you look at the first picture you can see the new crossbar behind the axle.

Farther back on the swing arm will also give you more rear wheel travel. Watch for any stress cracks since you you now putting more leverage on the swing arm with the axle relocated.

I will definitely keep an eye on it but this thing is beefy so I suspect it will be good to go.

same reason when i had to revamp my briken yerf swing arm i lengthened it by 3 inches ti get it closer to the wheelbase of a crossfire. on a crossfire axle the axle is further back from the shock mount than the yerf, even though the swingers are similar. instead of moving the axle and brakes i extended the mounts. this allowed me to lay my 15" shocks in the stock mounts and give me leverage for a better ride.

I considered going that route but I wasn't sure all my cables and lines would reach.

i thought it would be trickier to get the axle hangers square.

I tacked the front of each mount so I could move it and then spun the axle. You could feel when they weren't square.
