Torq A Verter?????
I am in the process of building an adult kart. Whoo Hoo. It is a converted hard rail Manco that is in the process of getting front and rear suspension from an ATV. This kart was allready heavy and with the extra tubing, suspension and extras that are to be added I aquired a 1450 series B&S rated at 14.5 horse (305cc). I would like a variable speed Comet but the 40 series is not being produced yet and may never be. I am told that this engine may rip a 30 series apart. Has anybody tried the 30 series on this big of an engine. What are my options? Engine is a 1 inch shaft. Jack shaft is 3/4. I am using the jackshaft plate due to disc brake set up on left. Chain drive is on the right.

IMO your options are simple- just buy a 40/44 series clutch and driven from any of the numerous vendors on the internet! The 40/44 series are still available and parts are still plentiful. Comet though out of business wasn't the only manufacturer.The others look like copies and I would figure they'd perform similarly. I'm sure the 30 series would handle the 14.5 hp but it would have a shorter life span also there's really not enough meat on the inner shaft to have it machined for the 1" shaft and be reliable- not even considering the cost. Also the 30 series drivens are 5/8" bore.

Would that set up give me the low end torque to high end speed change like the torq a verter supposidly does? I would like that option as this kart is going to hopefully be easily changed via tires and suspension to go from off-road to sand to snow to 1/8 mile drag strip.

A tor-q-verter is an version of the 30 series- only mounted to a plate for easy/complete installation. The 40/44 will have exactly the same performance, your low-end torque requirements are based off the output sprocket(jackshaft) size and axle sprocket size.The CVT will usually get you to top speed well inside the 1/8 mile mark. For that amount of versabilty I would set-up the axle sprocket with split/quick change sprockets & sprocket holder. Depending on your tire sizes/variety you may get the result needed with them alone.

you can buy a 30 series driver for a 1" bore and a 3/4" bore driven as well but i agree w/ msm; grab up a 40 series off fleabay and move forward.
i really doubt a 30 would handle the output of a big motor in a heavy cart with traction w/o chronic belt smoke |
