300xrx Smoking, exhaust gasket?
I noticed the other day that when I start the TM300XRX, as it warms up there is noticeable smoke coming from where the exhaust pipe bolts to the engine. I thought it might just be loose, so I've tightened it as much as I can, but it's still smoking as well as a strong smell of burning oil. I haven't completely pulled the pipe yet, wondering if it's a bad gasket? I don't see any cracks or rust.

Is the oil smoke and smell from oil dripping on the exhaust or coming from the exhaust. Going from your post if accurate I would say to replace the exhaust gasket and most likely the rings as well.

The smoke doesn't really look like white "oil smoke" I don't think. And there's no excess or white smoke coming from the muffler. I'm gonna change the oil this weekend and pull and check the header pipe and gasket.

Well I changed the oil yesterday, and checked the exhaust flange. Since the oil change I haven't noticed the smoke or smell. I took a nice little drive down the mountain road today and no problems. I'm wondering if I had overfilled the oil last time I changed it.

The rubber gasket around the muffler caught on fire for me, keep in mind this was in February when it was cold ... not sure why It got so hot. any recommendations for something available to use as a gasket? The vibration is killer !!!

Where is this rubber gasket located?

It goes around the muffler between the muffler and the muffler mount.

The muffler shouldn't get that hot to melt that. What brand buggy, year if known and engine. Need to have more information.

New 2016 trailmaster XRS 300. See my other thread where I mention that I'm having what I think are fuel system issues.
It's possible that they are related I suppose. When my gasket caught on fire it was actually sitting in my garage and I was trying to get it started and had been cranking at it for a little while. Another time after driving it with limited success and trying to get it started again it was smoking. Sound like I'm running way too lean ? How do I adjust that if so ? |

To the best of my knowledge, there is no adjustment on the carb. I cannot find jets that will fit it or rebuild kits. Is it still under warranty? I believe anything emissions including the carb are 3 or 5 years. It should be in the owners manual. If not BVPowersports.com should have an owners manual on their web site.

This is where I found my jets. They have other carb parts as well.

Thanks for that info. I have been told the 300 was a Yamaha based engine but Yamaha said they never seen a jet like that one and Keihn and Mikuni jets will not work.

From what I gathered in my searching, it appears that Yamaha never sold that engine in the US, at least the version the TM engine is based on.

Just like the GY6 which Honda never used in the US, only Europe and Asia.

True. The problem with the 300 is searches for "Linhai 300" or Yamaha Majesty 300" (or variants thereof) usually turns up stuff that isn't compatible with the trailmaster engine. Especially that darned carb. I was tempted to switch mine out, but other than parts availability I'm happy with it overall. On my buggy anyway.

Know what you mean, just like the GY6 A series and GY6 B series engines. Look alike but parts won't swap.
