Hard to start? Bad Idle? Don't forget to check your valves.
Just a reminder that it doesn't hurt to check your valve clearance everyone in a while. I recently had a scooter in the shop the other day. This is one that I sold new and it was probably the best running one I've ever had so when the opportunity came to buy it back, I did. Would only run for a little bit and then it would just shut off. At first acted like it was running out of fuel. However, attempts to give it fuel (carb cleaner) would kill it faster. At a loss, I even replaced the carb. Same dang thing. Then I remembered that bad valve clearance can make engines to weird things. Pulled the cover and sure as heck there was 0 lash on the exhaust side. Set both valves, fired right up purrs like a kitten.
So...if you have one that is real tough to start and just won't idle, and its never had the valve clearance checked, check it. These aluminum heads can be soft. Use causes the seat to raise and takes out the clearance and causes it to run like crap. |

Yes, they have to be set while the piston is TDC

has to be TDC on the power stroke. For mine, I just watch the cam lobe individually and make sure it is on the back side. Set it and spin it around till the other one is the same and set it and be done.
