well guys I have been browsing your forums for about a week and decided its time to join. I have been into ATVs all my life mainly sport quads. Last July my wife wrecked her quad and ended up with broke leg ribs and everybit of that good stuff so after that she would not ride anymore and wanted my fourwheelers gone being a good husband i said ok.

A couple of months later we took vacation and some friends thought it would be fun to ride go karts well she fell in love so i said well they make offroad karts or mini buggies.... I have always wanted to build one haha.... she jumped all over the idea seeing as how they have a roll cage.... I got to looking around and traded a 22 rifle for a running Murray kilowatt. My intent is to completely change the suspension, different hubs so i can mount ATV tires, and of course a bigger motor seeing as how i way 240 pounds.... but this wont be the only ride i have... i am trying to find another one for my wife... but it will be a couple months before i find the right one...

So what would you guys say i need to do to a murry kilowatt to make it trail worthy... i would like to have it good enough to trail ride like i would on my atv in the mountains without beating my brains out.. top speed is not the issue i dont mind the speed it has now because lets face it im not gonna be running no more than 20mph on a mountain trail... so i need bottom end grunt..

I'm not sure if you would be able to properly mod the murray for serious atv trails, but it should be fun to try. The engine will need a serious upgrade or replacement, and according to buggymaster, the axles are weak, which is no different than most of the other buggies out there. It's hard to see in the available pictures, but does the front end have single A-arms, or dual? Take a look around, get some ideas, and welcome to the addiction.

it has single a arms but from the looks of it.... it will not be hard to make me some new mounts and put a dual set up on it... i forgot to mention i can weld have not go a welder right now but hope to get me one soon.... when i get my welder i will be putting some atv front a arms for sure... as far as the back suspenion the axle is not a worry because i want to use a swingarm off the back of an atv and get rid of the whole go kart mechanism under the back of it..... start out as a murry and after time make it a full on mini buggy.... i liked the murry because in the back has a very good platform to make motor changes in my opinion...

i have road it a little bit but i had a 03 polaris predator i have road for about 5 years so definetly board with the power it has....

It really comes down to how much time, energy, dollars and patience you can commit to the project. I'm about two years in to mine and wouldn't wish 50-75 percent of what it's taken to build it on anyone. a lot of dead-end, back-to-the-drawing-board work is involved converting a go kart like you have into an off-road buggy. Your comment "but from the looks of it ..." is the really kicker, it's what all of us think when we stare at these things and the creative fabricator bulb in our brains lights up--on the flip side, every thing you do in one spot on them comes back to haunt you with more work somewhere else--it's nearly never ending. read my yerf upgrade thread and look at the timeline off it to get an idea and see all the stuff on it i built, then chopped apart and threw aside repeatedly ... I've got about 1.5 percent ride time and 98.5 build time.

You'd be better off finding a decent used 150- 250 powered buggy or building from scratch off a set of plans, of which there are many available. Dollar-wise, i could have bought a really nice 250-400+ powered buggy by now. (doesn't mean i wouldn't mod that though lol)

If you insist on going off the rails on the crazy train, i have a pretty much completely developed out bulletproof swingarm and GY-6 engine that i might consider selling.

Xbird nailed it. You should sell it while you can. I am selling my manco vortex so I can get a 150. I had fun with it but pushed and pulled it more than I rode it on the trails. Check out my pics. I thought the same thing as you. Sorry to pop your bubble. A lot of fun just not on trails with ruts.

I think the 1st thing you need to do is buy the wife a new camera before even thinking about a buggy. LOL

Where are you at with your kart, Panther?
Are you going to modify it or look for a 150cc ?

Hell yeah, You will be way happier.
Any certain brands or models?
After reading all the reviews I waited patiently and found the Carbide I wanted. Good luck and remember search CL type in all the different spellings to increase your odds and all the surrounding cities.

IE: 150cc 150 cc go kart gokart go-kart go cart gocart go-cart buggy buggie fun kart yard cart

a little time consuming but a good way to be the first to a good deal.

Good luck.
