Won't Go to Neutral
I'm new to go karts, I bought Fox Pro II without an owners manual. It has a 10 hp Tecumseh with electric start, and when I start it, it wants to take off, even when at idle. I don't know what torque converter it has, here are some pictures.
It hadn't been run in about 2 years before I bought it, I don't know if parts are worn out and need to be replaced, or if it just needs to be cleaned and lubed. Thanks for your help. |

I would say it just needs a good cleaning and lube.

It looks like a 40 series clutch. You'll need to try and lightly remove the rust as that will grab at the belt-the parts look okay, Try this link for a visual and the components of your system http://www.*****************/asymapp.htm

I haven't had a chance to clean it yet, it's dark by the time I get home from work. Hopefully Saturday I can disassemble and clean it.

I wasn't able to work on it today. I fell at work yesterday and cracked a couple of ribs, so I'm trying not to do much more than just breathe. Hopefully I'll feel good enough to work on it soon, I need to have it fixed before Christmas. I'll be sure to post results and pictures when I do.

Stupid accident really, I got my feet tangled in some scaffold bracing, and couldn't catch myself before I hit the ground. Only fell about 6 feet, but I guess I landed wrong.

Sorry for the late reply. I finally got to work on it, cleaned it up with a wire brush and sand paper.It is better, seems like it is getting better the more I drive it. A couple of times it has stuck in gear, stalling the engine when I stop. I tapped on it a little and it popped back, releasing the belt. Is there any way to service the drive wheel on a model 40? It looks like the nut is welded so it can't be disassembled.

Are you feeling better? Are you referrring to the model 40 driven or driver pulley?Here's a link to that :http://www.gopowersports.com/Comet/40series.pdf You'll need an impact wrench to spin the bell off that's why it's welded! Your pics didn't have a retaining nut and washer to hold the clutch on the crankshaft-did you remove it?Try spraying a WD40 type lube down in the bottom between the pulleys (wipe any lube that may get on the sides of the pulleys)of both clutch and driven units to help them slide better as there're probably rusted up too.

I'm starting to feel better, thanks for asking. I was referring to the driver pulley. Here is a picture of it when it stuck in gear.
I did remove the nut so I could clean the pulley. Thanks for the link, it helps to see an exploded view. If I understand it right, the whole outer cover spins off if I use an impact wrench on the nut? |

You did a great job on cleaning the pulley.You are correct about the bell/cover spinning off,Take the belt off and try spraying the lube down on the shaft to see if that free's it up.

It works, just not as smooth as I would like. I haven't had a chance to disassemble and clean the drive pulley yet, hopefully this weekend.

Wow, what a difference! Thanks metalstudman1 for telling me how to get it apart. I took it apart, cleaned everything with a brass wire brush wheel in a drill, soaked everything in brake parts cleaner, then lubed all of the parts with dry lube. It shifts into gear great, very smooth, and no trying to creep at idle.
It seems like there is too much play in the belt. The info I have found says there should be 1/8-3/16" play around the shaft of the driver pulley, and I have about 1/2". The jackshaft plate isn't slotted, so I don't see how to tighten it up. Is it possible that I have the wrong belt? The number on the belt is 203785. Thanks again. Glad to hear you got it working better!!I don't know if your belt number is correct.All the CVT system I've dealt with don't have a means of adjustment for the belt.Does the belt fit flush with the top of the driven pulley?(your belt should be 7/8" wide)If not,then the belt could be worn-and with a worn belt you have normal stretching.This could account for a small amount of play on the clutch.More play in the belt on the clutch is better than too tight as it won't try to launch during idle.A worn belt will fit well below the top of the driven pulley and reduce top speed slightly, if the belt get's fraying at the narrow/bottom part of the belt replace it immediately as it is riding on the rivets of the driven pulley.

The belt looks OK, and looks like it is flush with the top of the driven pulley. The drive pulley moves about 1/2 of it's travel before it engages the belt, and at top speed, doesn't look like it goes down in the driven pulley at all. It works great, just wondering if the top speed would be higher if the belt was tighter.

I just found some info that makes me think my cart has the wrong belt.
http://www.*****************/beltchart.htm My center distance on the pulley's is 7 7/8", the chart shows that it should be the 203784 belt, instead of the 203785 that I have. The 84 is about an inch shorter than the 85. |

Sounds like you've solved your own issue!!Yes it will pull better from a stop and go faster with the right belt (not a whole lot though)!A worn belt that is narrower than 7/8" will slow it down too.Since you have the smallest driven pulley (7 1/2"),making it go faster will have to be a mod to the axle sprocket (smaller or less teeth) or engine mod. Just for info's sake-I've used the 30 series 6" driven with a 40 clutch and gained about 4-5 mph top-end in the past, but that was with a custom back plate with no problems.
