Is it the trans that is gone or what could it be?

Have you pulled the CVT cover off yet to see if there's excessive belt dust/belt wear/broke belt? is the breather clean?

It would roll freely with a broke belt, probably wouldn't roll very smooth with a the gear drive damaged.Inspection of the CVT is where I'd start to at least eliminate suspect items. CVT-driverside big horizontal side cover. If you're in doubt about the ease of removal there are plenty of youtube vid's on his subject that explain it.

Thanks I will check it... I feel as it might be the belt because when I put it in gear and hit the gas yesterday it felt like it was slipping and then would catch.... It was doing it in reverse and forward

When you observe the belt turning (rear wheels elevated) did you watch as you throttle it to see if the belt was climbing the variator? The black rubber band is most likely the gasket!!!

NO-Since you say the belt is good-. . Your shifter working smoothly without watching the CVT functioning doesn't tell us much right now!!
Elevate the rear wheels of the buggy- Seeing if the rear wheels will turn without a load is important and watching the belt move on the variator & clutch while throttling will help locate or eliminate the issue. If possible get someone to help shooting some video of the CVT & rear wheels while working the throttle, changing from forward to reverse. You need to verify the belt is moving the way it's supposed too- Variator (part with the fins, front of the engine)- the belt should climb the pulley as throttle is applied. The clutch - belt should go from the top of the pulleys down to the shaft as more throttle is applied. Use the brakes to stop the belt movement before trying F-N-R.
You/we need to eliminate suspect items to know which way to help you go play again and stop stressing!!!!

"black rubber band like" sounds like an o-ring or part of a bearing seal.

you should see something like this going on, if not than maybe its just the clutch or belt.
