Default yerf dog clutch

Hey everyone... My son bought a yerf dog kart with the Tecumseh 6.0hp.. it ran and drove ok but in a quest to make it faster I wanted to change the gearing.. instead a friend of mine had a used clutch from a 4 wheeler and he was looking to trade the converter set up on our kart and I ran the chain directly from the crank clutch to the axle... now the dang thing wont go up a hill and the clutch starts to smoke.. did I screw up by eliminating the belt drive or is the clutch junk...is there a specific type of clutch I should use for the new direct drive set-up?
