Default Chain popping noise

Well got the chain on yesterday and now have an issue with popping when the tires are turned. I have the swing arm on jackstands with no load on the tires and rotating them by hand. It is making a distinct popping sound throughout rotation. I have the engine mounted solid and have fabbed an adjustable idler sprocket. so the chain goes over the trans sprocket then the axle sprocket then the idler and on and on. The popping seems to be coming from the idler. I got the gear from surplus Center and am running #50 chain. It almost seems like the valley between the teeth is too deep.

Any ideas?

In the past when I used sprocket idler's I would get the same thing (Yes, they seem to cut the teeth too deep and the chain struggles to get out) That's why I use a smooth wheel to eliminate that and the sprocket idler has to be "perfectly" aligned or they wear out the bearing very fast where the smooth wheel doesn't. Also the chain will try to twist when leaving the drive sprocket & on the return trip, also causing a clicking, popping noise. I agree with your location as I've found it works better on the bottom than the top for catching the slack. When you rotate the wheel without the idler engaged does the chain ride on one side or the other of the sprockets- I spend lot's of time rotating my stuff to get the natural alignment even when it doesn't match my measurements for a true alignment.

I'll have to look closer at the valley measurement of the idler. I left the axle sprocket loose on the axle during setup and rotated the assembly several times until the sprocket found a common c/l. so it runs true. I appreciate the feedback. My next thought is to machine the od of the idler teeth down to make the transition easier.

Are you running a # 50 chain as well or the stock chain. Remember the stock chain looks the correct size but it is metric. I had this problem on my challenger using the stock metric chain with a #50 sprocket. The pitch is different.

I got the chain, 39 tooth sprocket and idler from Surplus Center all #50. The sprocket on the reverse unit is 530 I believe. The idler does have deeper roots between the teeth than the drive sprocket. So I may look for another idler or turn down the od on a lathe.

The main difference is the pitch
