How do I remove the variator nut?

150cc RunMaster. I'm trying to remove the nut on the front pulley in order to install a new belt. I've broken one entire fin and two halves trying to hold it in place. I've used an 18v Makita impact with no luck. So, how do I get that nut off? It's not left-handed threads, is it? Secondly, will it hurt anything to continuing using that variator fan with the broken fins?

you will need a bigger impact, maybe a air powered one and a good compresser. its regular threads lefty loosey. you will need to at least remove a fin diretly across from the broken one but its better to get a new fan because it will cool better

yep..big impact. I have had some luck with a strap wrench as well to hold the variator in a manual removal but impact makes short work of it.

Thanks guys. I will try to find some time tonight after work. Unfortunately, no air tools, but I'll try a corded impact to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks again. Yes, it took a little patience, but the corded impact did the trick. The gasket was distroyed when I took the cover off. Has anyone used the make-a-gasket paste? I 'assume' it would be fine and come off easy enough when the belt breaks next time. What is the average hours on those belts. I'm sure it all depends on the type of abuse and starts/stops.

Permagasket should be fine. I wouldn't say there is an average for belt life. As you mentioned, it is all relative to the type of riding and abuse.
