Gravity fed fuel takes forever???
It seems that when I run my tank dry, it takes about 12hrs for my fuel to get into the line? Anyone know why?

why are you waiting for it to get in the line? crank it and go.

it ain't going to affect your mileage because it ain't going to burn any gas before it gets to the carb. anyway.

zman, even if I try to crank, it won't work. it seems if I plug up the intake filter that I will crank AFTER it's been sitting for 30mins or so...do these things have pumps? I plan on getting a new gas tank soon, so we will see what happens then...

I actually have the issue. Previous owner had a gas setup with a fuel pump but I took it off and went with gravity fed. Whenever I run out of fuel the go kart will not start. I had to take off the filter and use starter fluid to get it started. It then runs fine after that. Maybe I'll try throwing back the fuel pump?

Interesting! Try blocking off the intake for the air filter with your arm! It seems to work well after letting the fuel sit for an hour or so.

Take gas cap off and blow in it to get things going. (Gets rid of trapped air in line).

It sounds like one of your vent ports for the fuel bowl is clogged. Any of the above will help, but I would go with removing cap, holding throttle open and try starting it. The engine vacuum will help pull fuel through the jets, till it will run. The reason you have that delay is the bowl is now empty, and without an opening, it creates a vapor lock. Fuel will eventually trickle down into the bowl, then it will run, and keep the flow going. Another thing to consider, is the size of the fuel hose, and its age. Most people replace it with 1 size bigger hose, and never have any issues beyond that.

yota, I was wondering about that. And earlier today, I was upset because my hose barb from the tank was epoxied in. Well, I went to take off the fuel line earlier, and the "permanently" bonded barb came out. I plan on a new tank soon, and I'll just get a bigger line to go with it when this happens. Until then, I'm just trying to do sci fair stuff and get it over with... Once that's done, we'll let the kart sit until funds are collected and modding commences.

If it has the vacuum operated petcock valve, you will need to apply vacuum to the line to get the fuel to fill the float bowl. The carburetor vent hose should keep a vapor lock from happening. If it is vapor locking, check the vent hose for a clog.

Yerf's are gravity only. Be sure to check the filler cap as well, although I doubt it would run very long if it was.

Is the carburetor vent hose the one that just hangs limp and doesn't connect to anything?

Like yota says, the fuel cap has to be vented too. If the cap or vent line are clogged, fuel will not flow poperly. Last edited by 351mustanger; 11-24-2013 at 10:17 PM. |

Idk if anything is inside the line(s) but everything is stock and vented. The Carb vent hose is hanging loose and stuff. what's it supposed to do anyway?

The fuel cap is vented because: in order for fuel to leave the tank it needs to be replaced with air. Like when you put your finger over the end of your drinking straw and hold some liquid in it. It will not come out until you let your finger off of the straw. The bowl vent works in the opposite way. When fuel enters the bowl it pushes the air out of the vent hose. If one or both of these is restricted, fuel will not flow as it should. Hey, I have an idea for your next science fair project!

Lol. This one is becoming more of a pain in the @$$ than I imagined! I just want to get the experiment done and ground the buggy till I get repairs/reinforcements ordered...
