Welding tips
Okay I am getting my hands on an old arc welder to reweld my exhaust and fix a few crappy welds. Any tips?? Rods? Amperage ? Anything else? Thanks.

Alway test on something else first, and try to use the lowest setting you can and still get a good stick, so as not to burn thru what you're working on! Oh yea, and like the tip!! lol

for someone learning to weld, welding on a exhaust system will be a real test as thin as that metal is. esp. with a stick welder. your best bet may be to take the exhaust with you to a welder supply house and see what they recommend. it will be a lot easier to work with it off the cart.

I juat bought an arc welder from harbor frieghts $200 225 amps best investment welded a few things on the buggy but not the nuffler I hear it takes skills for that wich I don't have lol ...I would assume for the muffler to use a 3/32 6011 stick on very low amprage perhaps 50 amps.. but practice first on some old muffler first and I mean a lot...Eddie.

Yup, thats why I said test yourself on something else first. Try to find a piece of metal of the same gage as your muffle if possible!

For the thin stuff, you might also see what a muffler shop would charge to do it, the stick/arc welders are cool as hell, and can produce awesome welds, but structurally and aesthetically, but are hard to get the thin stuff down without blowing holes in it. Even flux is tough to get the thin stuff, I reattached the head pipe to the flange on the yerf using flux, and it was a challenge for sure, it ain't pretty, but it held.

As an ex "old school" trucker, I love the old "buzz box" welders, but unless you got real skills on them you're mostly gonna get "bugger" welds! lol

as for rods, 6013 is more of a rod for vertical welds, for flat welds I always use 7014
