Default GY6 Cam Shaft

SO this is what my cam shaft looks like. How do I line it up with the piston?

I heard it too !!!!!!!

Josh, There are numerous instructional posts on the web showing how to properly install your cam. Do a search on 'gy6 cam install". View as many as you can. you will then have a good understanding of the process. The more research and homework you do, the better your success. If you hit a snag, PM me.

You kill me Kliff. Thats good stuff right there

Take out the plug. Put a straw in the hole. Raise the piston all the way up on the compression stroke. Now your at TDC. Valves should be loose. Remove the rocker arms. Loosen the chain via the chain tensioner across from the starter. Take chain off the cam gear. Remove cam

When you put the new cam in make sure the big hole is pointing away from the piston. The 2 small holes and the straight line should be in relation to the piston.

Now do everything backwards.

Attached is a picture of what it should look like when the piston is at top dead center (TDC) and the cam is properly installed. Just draw an imaginary line across those two little holes and that should be paralell to the edge of the head.

Way back when this one said "...how hard could it be..." I saw a young mancoman on the horizon, one that doesn't read responses, little to know atttention span, and just looking for someone to open up and do it for him.

I may be wrong, just the way I read him. Good luck guys. Me and ChuckO has got the real deal, in a 14 yr old over at that other place, huh ChuckO? Course all of y'all are welcome to help, Matt, aka: dunebuggyduderacerxxx will always be open for help, and some of his tool analogies are funny as all get out!

He seems sincere, and wants not just to get it done, but to learn from it. we'll even get him talking the lingo before it's over!
Problem is, I ain't a teacher. I have trouble conveying what I mean, I just do. He's gonna be looking to you, ChuckO, and the other older pharts for the illustious words of wisdom. I'll post some pics, and rough out details, as I do, y'all may need to smooth out the rough edges for me...LOL

Believe it or not, that keeps the engine from being able to fire backwards if I am not mistaken.

It's exactly what clutch dust says, a starting decompression device, that only comes into play at engine starting speeds, to remove load from the starter.

<insert wrong answer buzzer noise here> ..sorry, no decompressor on the GY6. That keeps the engine from running in reverse. It is called a stopper plate. No kidding.

Well I should rephrase slightly, the engine can't quite run in reverse being that it is a four stroke but it can kick back, and that stopper plate keeps it from kicking too much so to speak.

Hardly, I deal with misconception and blind acceptance on a daily basis, you have to if you're going to "re-translate" poorly translated Chinese nomenclature, to American terminology.

Just because an item is called a "stop" and used as a generalized translation, usually by a Chinese, that knows nothing about engines, and less about American engine nomenclature, doesn't make it gospel. Though, as we see in this example, it is accepted as such. And with an inability imposed on us to direct those unable to grasp such a theory with outside links, this site will continue to labor behind those where a wealth of info flows daily.

A chinese manual or publication of any kind, PDF, etc, has HUNDREDS of poor item descriptions, nomenclature, translations, to take those that appear suspicious, and overtly tag American definitions to their function, by name alone, is simply ludicrous.

Kliff, Great job, or should I say excellent execution on the defensive articulation where as I was clearly doing a cut and paste mockery of your insulting a 16 year old kid's intelligence. You get a star on your forehead, or should I say an astrum on your occipitofrontal region. Yayyyy Nomenclature!!! But the fact remains that if I need this particular part and I'm sticking with Buggyaster's "Chinese nomenclature" of gy6 stopper plate, and I do a general Google search for it, I get exactly what Josh is holding. Now say I need this particular part and I do a Google search for your ever so meticulously translated "American terminology" of gy6 starting decompression device, no such luck, or in your case, negative coextensive fortune. So, if I needed this part by your highly ingenious standards, I'm left with my phalange known as the pollex up my gluteus maximus rectal area. I didn't say that for the sake of what it is called, I actually know what it does. next time you have your valve cover off, take a good look at how it functions. It really does prevent the engine from running backwards. I was seeing if you actually knew what it was when I asked you to share what you thought it was. No harm done though.

You are absolutely correct, it is NOT a decompression device of any sort. But I still have trouble grasping it's ability(strength wise) to arrest the motion of a back fire. That is usually a violent and powerful reaction, even at idle or engine cranking speeds. Now my curiousty is peeked, because I have been blindly disabling them, thinking as before.

Next time I do tear into one, still OEM equipped, I will do just that, I will put it through every scenario I can come up with, to find it's intended, and factual function.

Sorry 'bout all the clamour...my bad.

PS.... what 'ffng fan club? devotees? HUH?

I don't think it is a dead blow stopper. If I remember right, it will actually hold the exhaust valve partially open or something like that. Has to do with how the rocker shafts work.
